The Boston Red Sox are wrapping up their series against the Tampa Bay Rays this afternoon. They currently trail 3-0 in the second inning. In the first inning first baseman Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch on the third pitch of the at-bat. He was in some pain heading down to first base but remained in the game. After the inning ended, Contreras signaled to the Red Sox dugout that he would leave the game. Andruw Monasterio replaced him at first base. The Red Sox are saying it’s a right-hand contusion for Contreras.
Contreras entered today hitting .259 with a .843 OPS. He had four doubles, eight home runs, 23 RBI, and 19 runs scored. He leads the Red Sox in home runs and in RBI. Contreras had been hit by a pitch eight times this season, which tied for the lead in all of baseball. Hopefully, the injury isn’t serious as the Red Sox need his bat in the lineup.
