Toronto Blue Jays Send a Hitter to Seattle Mariners

Series Preview: Toronto Blue Jays at Seattle Mariners with Probable Pitchers 5/9-5/11

The Toronto Blue Jays have completed a trade sending designated hitter Justin Turner to the Seattle Mariners in return for prospect RJ Schreck. This move comes just ahead of tomorrow’s MLB Trade Deadline.

Turner was in his first season with the Blue Jays after signing a $13 million, one-year deal this past offseason. This was to fill the void after Brandon Belt’s departure. At 39, Turner has shown flashes throughout the season and a rough patch to start the season due to illness. Prior to his stint with the Blue Jays, Turner had spent a significant portion of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers which included a 2020 World Series win.

In his run with the Blue Jays in 2024, Turner batted .254 with 76 hits, six home runs, 31 RBIs and 37 runs scored in 89 games. Across his career, Turner has batted .286 with 1,538 hits, 193 home runs, 790 RBIs, and 775 runs scored in 1629 career games.

With Turner being traded to Seattle, this is his sixth career MLB team that he will suit up for. He formerly played for the Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and the Toronto Blue Jays.

RJ Schreck, 24, has spent his 2024 season with the Everett AquaSox, an advanced A team in the Northwest League, and the Arkansas Travelers, a double-a team in the Texas League. Both teams are minor league affiliates of the Seattle Mariners where Schreck has taken time to develop as much as he can.

In 78 games for Everett, Schreck batted .261 with 72 hits, 12 home runs, 44 RBIs, and 38 runs scored in 78 games. His current numbers across eight games for Arkansas will slowly improve, but his combined numbers between both teams make this a nice acquisition as the Blue Jays look to improve in the long run.
