Texas Rangers 2024 All-Star Week Participants

Texas Rangers 2024 All-Star Week Participants

The 2024 All-Star Game Roster has been announced, and the World Series Champions and host team, Texas Rangers, will have one starter, one pitcher on the reserves list, one Home Run Derby participant, and three of the Rangers’ top prospects will participate in the All-Star Futures Game. As the defending World Series Champions, Texas Rangers Manager Bruce Bochy will manage the American League squad. He has announced that Mark Kotsay of the Oakland Athletics will be joining the Rangers coaching staff for the All-Star game. The All-Star Game will take place on July 16th at 7:00 PM CT. The Home Run Derby will occur on July 15th at 7:00 PM CT. The MLB All-Star Saturday events, including the Celebrity Softball Game and the Futures Game, will kick off at 3:10 PM CT.

All-Star Game Selections

2B – Marcus Semien

After Phase 2 of Fan Voting, Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien had 43% of the votes to Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve’s 57% of votes. However, the MLB announced on July 11th that Altuve would not play due to an injury sustained on July 5th and that Marcus Semien would start in his stead. Interestingly, Jose Altuve has been elected to nine All-Star teams but has not played in an All-Star game since 2018, citing injury each time.

This will be Semien’s third All-Star appearance as a starter in his career and second consecutive start as a Texas Ranger. Though he has been struggling as of late, Semien has a career slash line of .256/.323/.442. In 2024 he has slashed .235/.303/.382 across 91 games this season with 88 hits, 59 runs, 17 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, 50 RBIs, three stolen bases, 36 walks, and 55 strikeouts.

RHP – Kirby Yates

Rangers closer Kirby Yates was named to the 2024 All-Star team via player voting. 2024 will be his second trip to the All-Star Game, his first being in 2019. Yates was a free agent acquisition at the beginning of the 2024 season and has been lights out since joining the defending World Series Champions, earning a save in all 14 opportunities. He has a career W/L record of 22-20 with an ERA of 3.30 across 393 games, allowing 285 hits, 151 runs, 140 earned runs, 51 home runs, 150 walks, ten intentional walks, and striking out 531 batters across 382.0 innings. He has 76 career saves across ten years in the majors. During the 2024 season with the Rangers, he appeared in 32 games, allowing 14 hits, four runs, three earned runs, 14 walks, and striking out 45 across 32.1 innings.

Home Run Derby Selection

OF – Adolis Garcia

Postseason hero Adolis Garcia was chosen to represent the host team during the All-Star Home Run Derby. 2024 will be his second consecutive appearance in the Home Run Derby. Unlike 2023, Garcia will not be appearing in the All-Star game and will likely put forth more effort to win rather than bow out after the first round as he seems to have done last year. In round one of the 2023 Home Run Derby, Garcia faced off with his long-time best friend Randy Arozarena and ultimately lost 24 home runs to 17. Arozarena went on to the finals only to fall to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the final round, 25 home runs to 23.

In 2023, Adolis Garcia was a beast at the plate, racking up 136 hits, 108 runs, 29 doubles, 39 home runs, 107 RBIs, nine stolen bases, 65 walks, and 175 strikeouts across 148 games. During the Postseason, he garnered 20 hits, 11 runs, one double, eight home runs, 22 RBIs, two stolen bases, three walks, and 18 strikeouts before being sided-lined during Game 3 of the World Series due to injury. In 2024, Garcia has been struggling and is currently slashing .215/.279/.415 with 71 hits, 47 runs, 15 doubles, 17 home runs, 45 RBIs, seven stolen bases, 27 walks, and 101 strikeouts across the 88 games he has appeared in this season. The fans hope that perhaps the Home Run Derby will reset him and return him to the player he was in 2023.

All-Star Futures Game Selections

SS – Sebastian Walcott – Hickory Crawdads

Sebastian Walcott is undoubtedly one to watch in the coming years. As the MLB’s 72nd-ranked prospect and number-one-ranked prospect in the Rangers farm system, he will be a name to remember when it’s time for his big league debut. Walcott is slashing .235/.333/.401 with 64 hits, 42 runs, 16 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 27 RBIs, 39 walks, 11 stolen bases, and 88 strikeouts across 76 games this season. Walcott will participate not only in the All-Star Futures game but also in the Futures Skills Showcase. You can tune in for the Skills Showcase on Sunday, July 14th at 9:00 AM CT on MLB Network, MLB.TV, MLB.COM, and the MLB App.

RHP – Emiliano Teodo – Frisco RoughRiders

Emiliano Teodo has been among the Rangers’ top pitching prospects for several years. Coming in at 14th on the Ranger’s top prospect list, he should likely be higher with his current and past performances. After the 2023 season, Teodo was named the MiLB Reliever of the Year, and the 2024 season brought a new opportunity for the youngster. He was promoted from the Rangers high-A ballclub, the Hickory Crawdads, to the AA club, the Frisco RoughRiders, where he joined the starting rotation. He has a current W/L record of 5-2 with a 1.71 ERA across 68.1 innings of work, allowing 43 hits, 16 runs, 13 earned runs, two home runs, 34 walks, and struck out 89. His career W/L record is 13-11 with an ERA of 3.07 across 54 games and three years.

RHP – Winston Santos – Frisco RoughRiders

Winston Santos ranked the 15th Rangers prospect, has been tearing up minor leagues this year. He began the 2024 season with the Hickory Crawdads, pitching 12 games with a W/L record of 6-3 and a 2.80 ERA. He allowed 53 hits, 21 runs, 20 earned runs, three home runs, 20 walks, and struck out 81 across 64.1 innings with the ‘Dads. He was named the Southern Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week on April 21st, 2024. On June 23rd, Santos was promoted from Hickory to the Rangers AA club, the Frisco RoughRiders, where he has since made two starts. His current W/L record in Frisco is 1-0 with a 5.87 ERA after allowing nine hits, six runs, five earned runs, three home runs, one walk, and garnering 12 strikeouts across 7.2 innings of work. His career W/L record is 23-20 with a 4.27 ERA across 72 games in four years, allowing 292 hits, 165 runs, 148 earned runs, 34 home runs, 86 walks, and garnering 325 strikeouts across 312.0 innings of work.

All-Star Futures Game Coaching Staff

American League

2024 National Baseball Hall of Fame Inductee and Rangers Legend Adrian Beltre will head up the coaching staff for the American League All-Star Futures game. With him in the dugout will be a host of former Rangers. Raul Ibanez (bench coach), Prince Fielder (hitting coach), Francisco Cordero (pitching coach), Derek Holland (bullpen coach), Mitch Moreland (1B coach), Nelson Cruz (3B coach), Elvis Andrus (coach) and Kenny Holmberg (Minor League coach) round out the coaching staff for the American League team.

National League

If you thought that the American League dugout was the only place where you would find a host of former Rangers, you’d be horribly wrong. The National League dugout will also play home to even more Rangers legends during the Futures Game. Rangers Hall of Fame alumni Michael Young will head up the National League squad. Ian Kinsler (bench coach), Mark Teixeira (hitting coach), Darren Oliver (pitching coach), Colby Lewis (bullpen coach), Gary Matthews Jr. (1B coach), Gabe Alvarez (3B coach), and Vernon Wells (coach) will round out the coaching roster for the National League team.
