The St. Louis Cardinals start a three-game series against the San Diego Padres tonight. The Cardinals enter play tonight 5.5 games back in the National League Wild Card race. They will have a tough hill to climb if they want to make it back to the Postseason. The Cardinals will also be without third baseman Nolan Arenado. He is heading to the injured list with a shoulder injury. The corresponding move is the Cardinals activating infielder Nolan Gorman from the injured list. They are also recalling right-handed pitchers Ryan Fernandez, Roddery Munoz, and Andre Granillo. The recall of the pitchers is necessary to compensate for the loss of Ryan Helsley, Phil Maton, and Steven Matz. These players were all traded away.

Nolan Arenado

Arenado is hitting .235 this season in 96 games with a .660 OPS. He has 15 doubles, a triple, ten home runs, 43 RBI, 43 runs scored, two stolen bases, and 28 walks. Nolan Gorman

In three rehab games at Double-A Springfield, he hit .231 with a .769 OPS. He had a double, a home run, two RBI, and a run scored. Gorman has appeared in 381 career major league games, hitting .222 with a .734 OPS. He has 53 doubles, a triple, 69 home runs, 190 RBI, 176 runs scored, 15 stolen bases, and 142 walks.

Ryan Fernandez

Fernandez, in 11 games this season, is 0-2 with an 11.42 ERA, a 2.31 WHIP, and seven strikeouts in 8.2 innings. In 29 games at Triple-A Memphis, he is 4-1 with two saves, a 3.12 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, and 49 strikeouts in 34.2 innings. He appeared in 73 big league games in his career, going 1-8 with a 4.42 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, and 78 strikeouts in 75.1 innings.

Roddery Munoz

Munoz, in six games with the Cardinals this season, is posting an 8.10 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, and seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings. In 27 games at Memphis, he is 3-2 with a save, a 3.95 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, and 54 strikeouts in 41 innings. He appeared in 24 career big league games, with 17 of those coming as starts. Andre Granillo
