Series Recap: Texas Rangers vs. San Diego Padres 7/2-7/4

The Texas Rangers returned home to host the San Diego Padres in a three-game set starting on Tuesday and ending on Thursday, the Fourth of July. Here’s my series recap of the Rangers vs. Padres matchup at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Tuesday, July 2
The Rangers shutout the Padres 7-0 in the series opener on Tuesday night, also known as Dallas Stars night. Dallas Stars mascot Victor E Green threw out the first pitch. The Stars’ development camp players celebrated the Rangers’ win on a trip to Globe Life Field. Texas improved to 39-46, while San Diego fell to 46-43.

Before the ballgame, Rangers Today’s Jeff Wilson tweeted that Josh Jung remains in a holding pattern with his right wrist and has no plans to resume swinging a bat. Wilson tweeted that Tyler Mahle would start for the Round Rock Express on Tuesday to begin his rehab assignment. His final line on that start was one hit, no walks or earned runs, and one strikeout across two innings of work. He threw 19 pitches, 12 of which were strikes.

Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi pitched seven innings and gave up one hit and six strikeouts. Meanwhile, Padres starting pitcher Dylan Cease pitched just 3 2/3 innings and gave up eight hits, six earned runs, two walks, and five strikeouts.

The Rangers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Nathaniel Lowe homered on a fly ball to right field. Josh Smith scored for a 2-0 lead. The Rangers added a run in the bottom of the second inning. Leody Taveras doubled on a sharp fly ball to Jackson Merrill. Jonah Heim scored for a 3-0 lead.

The Rangers added two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Nathaniel Lowe homered on a fly ball to left center field. Josh Smith scored for a 5-0 lead. The Rangers added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Marcus Semien singled on a fly ball to Jurickson Profar. Leody Taveras scored for a 6-0 lead.

The Rangers added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jonathan Ornelas doubled on a sharp line drive to Jurickson Profar. Leody Taveras scored for a 7-0 lead. The Rangers shut out the Padres 7-0 after nine innings. For Texas, Jonathan Hernandez pitched two innings and gave up one strikeout. And, for San Diego, Eguy Rosario went 0-for-1.

Wednesday, July 3
The Rangers dropped a 6-4 decision to the Padres in the middle game at Globe Life Field on Wednesday night. Texas fell to 39-47, while San Diego improved to 47-43.

Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray pitched four innings and gave up seven hits, three earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. Padres starting pitcher Adam Mazur also pitched four innings but gave up seven hits, four earned runs, and four strikeouts.

Before the ballgame, Rangers Today’s Jeff Wilson tweeted that Rangers manager Bruce Bochy will shut down Josh Jung until next week to rest his wrist. Wilson also tweeted that there would be no Rangers starting in the MLB All-Star Game as Marcus Semien lost out at second base to Jose Altuve. The team also announced that the Rangers’ young superstar Wyatt Langford had been named MLB’s Rookie of the Month for June.

After two scoreless innings, San Diego got on the board in the top of the third inning. Manny Machado homered on a line drive to left center field. Jake Cronenworth scored for a 2-0 lead.

The Rangers finally got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Leody Taveras was out on a sacrifice fly to Jackson Merrill. Jonah Heim scored to cut the Padres’ lead in half, 2-1, with one out. Corey Seager doubled on a line drive to David Peralta. Marcus Semien scored to tie the game 2-2. Josh Smith doubled on a sharp line drive to Peralta. Seager scored to make it a 3-2 game.

The Rangers added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jonah Heim was out on a sacrifice fly to Jackson Merrill. Wyatt Langford scored to make it a 4-2 game with one out. The Padres made it a one-run game in the top of the fifth inning. Jackson Merrill singled on a ground ball to Josh Smith. Jurickson Profar, a former Texas Ranger, scored to cut the Rangers’ lead to 4-3. Jake Cronenworth went to third base.

The Padres tied the game at four apiece in the top of the sixth inning. Luis Arraez singled on a ground ball to Wyatt Langford. Ha-Seong Kim scored to tie the game 4-4. The Padres took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. David Peralta homered on a line drive to center field. Donovan Solano scored for a 6-4 lead.

The Rangers lost to the Padres 6-4 after nine innings. For Texas, Marcus Semien went 0-for-5. Robert Suarez pitched 1 1/3 innings for San Diego and gave up two strikeouts.


Thursday, July 4
The Rangers dropped a 3-1 decision to the Padres in the rubber match at Globe Life Field on the Fourth of July. The Padres won the series 2-1. Texas fell to 39-48, while San Diego improved to 48-43.

Rangers starting pitcher Max Scherzer pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up six hits, three earned runs, one walk, and three strikeouts. Padres starting pitcher Michael King pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up four hits, one earned run, two walks, and five strikeouts.

After three scoreless innings, San Diego got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Donovan Solano doubled on a line drive to Wyatt Langford. Jurickson Profar scored for a 1-0 lead. The Padres added a run in the top of the sixth inning. Jurickson Profar homered on a line drive to right field for a 2-0 lead.

The Rangers finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wyatt Langford singled on a line drive to Jurickson Profar. Corey Seager scored to cut the Padres’ lead to 2-1. Nathaniel Lowe went to second base. The Padres added a run in the top of the seventh inning. Ha-Seong Kim was out on a sacrifice fly to Wyatt Langford. Donovan Solano scored for a 3-1 lead with one out.

The Rangers lost to the Padres 3-1 after nine innings despite the young rookie sensation Wyatt Langford’s best attempt to single-handedly keep the Padres down. Robert Suarez pitched one inning for San Diego and garnered one strikeout.
