Seattle Mariners Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Mariners will take on the Rangers in the final game of the three-game series. Currently, 7-8 on the season and on a three-game win streak. Ahead of the series finale, the Mariners have made some roster moves. The Mariners have called up their No. 13 prospect per MLB Pipeline, Ben Williamson. Seattle placed Ryan Bliss on the IL with a torn bicep. Bliss is being transferred to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man roster. Dominic Canzone has been optioned down to Triple-A Tacoma to make room on the active roster.

Ben Williamson

The Mariners have not had the best defensive play at third base this season. That could change soon with Williamson joining the Major League roster. Entering the season, the Mariners had plans on using Jorge Polanco at third base. However, due to some early-season pain and defensive struggles, he hasn’t played at third in recent days. Saturday, Polanco was taking reps at second base prior to the game. Williamson did well in his first big-league spring training. In 11 Cactus League games, Williamson hit .375 with two runs, a triple, and four RBI. Starting the season out at Triple-A Tacoma, the 24-year-old has appeared in 14 games, hitting .281/.317/.333. He has three doubles, six runs, eight RBI and two stolen bases on the season. The expectations for Williamson are very modest, as he fills a hole for the big-league squad.

Dominic Canzone

The Mariners recalled Canzone on April 8th, when the Mariners placed Victor Robles on the Injured List. He has appeared in two games with the Mariners, striking out in two of his three at-bats. Sending Canzone back to Triple-A will leave the Mariners with three primary outfielders. They do have a couple utility guys in Dylan Moore and Miles Mastrobuoni. These players could play in the outfield in a pinch.

Ryan Bliss

It is expected now that Bliss’ torn left bicep will require surgery, and he will be out for 4-5 months. He could potentially miss the rest of the season, depending on the recovery process. Many have thought the Mariners would call up Cole Young. The Mariners value Young’s development more than rushing him to the big leagues. In 11 games this season, Bliss hit .200 with a double, a home run, three RBI and two stolen bases.
