Player Profile: Colson Montgomery

Colson Montgomery was born in Jasper, Indiana on February 27, 2002. He played high school baseball at Southridge High School in Huntingburg, IN. He was the top-ranked shortstop and the top-ranked overall player in Indiana. At Southridge, he played baseball, basketball, and football. On the diamond in his freshman year, he hit .387 with 33 RBI, he is also the all-time leading scorer at Southridge in basketball with 1,966 career points. In his senior year, he hit .333 with seven home runs, 23 RBI, and 24 stolen bases en route to Southridge’s first-ever state championship.  Montgomery was ranked the eighth shortstop in the country and the 39th overall player. He committed to play college baseball at Indiana University.

Montgomery was the 25th-ranked prospect entering the 2021 draft and the 14th-ranked high school prospect. He would end up being drafted by the Chicago White Sox with the 22nd overall pick.

2021

Montgomery’s first season he was with the White Sox rookie league team and in 26 games he slashed .287/.396/.362 with a .758 OPS; he had seven doubles, seven RBI, 16 runs scored, and 13 walks.


2022

Montgomery’s second season in the White Sox system saw him jump across three levels playing for Single-A Kannapolis, High-A Winston-Salem, and Double-A Birmingham. In 96 games he slashed .274/.381/.429 with a .810 OPS; he had 17 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 47 RBI, 58 runs scored, one stolen base, and 54 walks.

2023

Montgomery’s third season marked his debut on the prospect rankings. He was the 39th overall prospect by Baseball America and 38th by MLB.com. He played back in the rookie league, High-A Winston-Salem, and Double-A Birmingham. In 64 games he slashed .287/.456/.484 with a .940 OPS. He had 14 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 37 RBI, 51 runs scored, two stolen bases, and 56 walks. In the fall he played in the Arizona Fall League with Glendale and in 20 games he slashed .244/.300/.415 with a .715 OPS. He had one double, two triples, three home runs, 20 RBI, nine runs scored, and six walks.

2024

Montgomery ranked as the 15th prospect by Baseball America and the ninth by MLB Pipeline. He played in 130 games at Triple-A Charlotte. Montgomery hit .214 with a .710 OPS. He had 21 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs, 63 RBI, and 66 runs scored.
