Ronny Simón Joins the Pirates

Ronny Simón is a 25-year-old utility infielder. The Marlins designated him for assignment after a challenging game against the San Diego Padres. He committed three errors in four innings during that game. Despite this setback, Simón had shown promise earlier in the season, batting .354 in Triple-A and receiving support from several MLB players following the incident.

The Pirates have optioned Simón to Triple-A Indianapolis, where he will continue his development. This move adds depth to the Pirates’ infield and provides Simón with an opportunity to refine his skills in the minors.

Tanner Rainey Designated for Assignment

In a corresponding move, the Pirates have designated Tanner Rainey for assignment. Rainey, 32, had been competing for a bullpen spot after signing a minor league contract with Pittsburgh in December 2024. He had previously been effective for several years while working out of the Nationals’ bullpen.

This decision reflects the Pirates’ ongoing efforts to optimize their roster and bullpen depth. Rainey’s future with the organization will depend on whether he clears waivers. He might also be outrighted to the minor leagues. Alternatively, another team might claim him.
