The Philadelphia Phillies play the second game of their three-game series against the Chicago Cubs tonight. The Phillies took the first game of the series 13-7 last night. The win was much needed as they were 3-5 in their last eight games, averaging 3.9 runs per game while allowing 4.8 runs per game. Ahead of tonight’s game, the Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Chase Shugart from Triple-A Lehigh Valley while optioning left-handed pitcher Seth Johnson to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Johnson was called up yesterday and appeared in last night’s game, going 1.2 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits. He walked two and struck out one.

Chase Shugart

Shugart has made five appearances this season at Triple-A. He’s posting a 1.80 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and six strikeouts in five innings. The Phillies acquired him in a trade from the Pirates back in January. He made 35 appearances last season with the Pirates, going 4-3. He posted a 3.40 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, and had 31 strikeouts in 45 innings. In 13 minor league games, he went 1-1. He had a 2.08 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP, and 21 strikeouts in 21.2 innings.

Seth Johnson

Johnson, in six games at Triple-A this season, is posting a 3.00 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and 11 strikeouts in six innings. He appeared in ten games for the Phillies last season, going 1-1 with a 4.26 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 12.2 innings.
