NCAA Regional Game Recap: Texas Dominates Again

The Texas Longhorns and Tarleton State Texans met in the winner’s bracket tonight. Texas is coming off a 19-1 win over Holy Cross to start the tournament. Tarleton State is coming off an 11-5 win over UC Santa Barbara in their first game of the tournament. The Longhorns had southpaw Dylan Volantis on the mound. He brought in an 8-1 record with a 2.00 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP, and 109 strikeouts in 76.2 innings. The Texans had Ethan Wendel on the mound, bringing in a 6-3 record with a 5.64 ERA, a 1.45 WHIP, and 41 strikeouts in 68.2 innings.

Texas vs. Tarleton State

The Longhorns opened the scoring at the top of the first. After a walk and a hit batter, the Texans got an out, but then Temo Becerra singled home a run to make it 1-0. Tarleton led off the game with what was ruled a double, but the play was reviewed, and the call was overturned, and he was ruled out at second. Texas exploded for five runs in the second. Aiden Robbins hit a three-run homer, and Carson Tinney and Anthony Pack Jr. each hit a solo home run.

In the third, Ethan Mendoza hit a solo home run. In the fourth inning, Texas added five more runs as Mendoza, Robbins, Tinney, and Pack Jr all drew bases-loaded walks. Robbins would score on a wild pitch to make it 12-0. The Longhorns got three runs in the sixth as one scored on a wild pitch, another on a sacrifice fly, and the third on a single. Tarleton got on the board with two runs in the seventh. Texas got another run in the eighth.

Volantis went 6.2 innings, allowing a run on three hits. He walked one and struck out seven in the win. Wendel lasted only two innings, allowing six runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out four. The rest of the Tarleton bullpen went seven innings, allowing ten runs on seven hits. They walked 14 and struck out three.

Texas will face the winner of the losers’ bracket game tomorrow night. Tarleton faces UC Santa Barbara again tomorrow. This time it’s win or go home for the Texans.
