NCAA Baseball Tournament Day 14: Championship Series Set

The National Championship Series is officially set for a best-of-three series coming up this weekend.

North Carolina Advances to National Championship

North Carolina jumped out to an early lead thanks to Owen Hull. Hull doubled home a run, then he stole third and would score on an error, making it 2-0. The Mountaineers got one of the two runs back as Matthew Graveline singled home a run. North Carolina added on in the third with a Gavin Gallgher single, then Cooper Nicholson tripled home two more, making it 5-1. They weren’t done there as Hull doubled home another run and Gallagher singled home two more, both of which came in the fourth. In the sixth, Gallagher singled home a run, and Erik Paulsen singled home a run, making it 10-1 Tar Heels.

North Carolina was back at it in the seventh, Carter French doubled home a run, and Jake Schaffner singled home a run. In the bottom half, Gavin Kelly tripled home a run, making it 12-2. Paul Schoenfeld singled home Kelly. Graveline drove home a run, and Matt Ineich singled home a run. Graveline would also score on a passed ball to make it 12-6. Kelly hit a solo home run to make it 12-7, but that was it, and North Carolina advanced to the National Championship Series.

Folger Boaz got the start for the Tar Hells, going one inning, allowing a run on two hits. He walked one and struck out one. Jackson Rose relieved Boaz, going 4.1 scoreless innings. He allowed two, walked two, and struck out two. Caden Glauber shut the door as he has all tournament, allowing a run on three hits. He walked one and struck out three. Chansen Cole got the ball again but lasted only 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out one.

Oklahoma Advances with Win over Georgia

Oklahoma got on the board first with a solo home run from Jason Walk. Trey Gambill added to their lead with a solo home run. Oklahoma continued to add on as Dasan Harris hit a two-run home run, extending the lead to 4-0. Ryan Black got the Bulldogs on the board with an RBI single in the fifth. Harris gave the run back to Oklahoma with an RBI groundout. The sixth, the Bulldogs pulled within two behind bases-loaded walks from Kolby Branch and Black to make it 5-3.

Oklahoma tacked on another run in the seventh on a Jaxon Willits RBI double. Harri hit a two-run home run in the eighth to make it 8-3 for the Sooners. Oklahoma added on in the eighth with a solo home run from Walk. Oklahoma in the ninth woesn’t done as Gambill doubled home two more to make it 11-3. Georgia did get a run in the ninth on a solo home run from Branch. Oklahoma would advance to the National Championship Series as well with an 11-4 win.

Nick Wesloski got the start for the Sooners, going 5.2 innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits. He walked two and struck out four. LJ Mercurius went 4.1 innings, allowing a run on two hits. He walked two and struck out two. Paul Farley got the start for Georgia, going 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out six. The remainder of the Bulldogs’ pitchers went 5.2 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits. They walked two and struck out eight.
