MLB Spring Training Recap: Red Sox Suffer First Grapefruit League Loss

The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays met for the first time this spring today.

Red Sox vs. Rays

Scoring

The first eight innings saw this game remain scoreless. The first runner didn’t reach second base until the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the ninth the Red Sox opened the scoring with an RBI triple from Mickey Gasper that drove home Mikey Romero who singled in the previous at-bat. In the bottom half, Blake Sabol led off the inning with a single. The Red Sox got back-to-back outs but a double from Logan Davidson made it second and third. Jonny DeLuca then singled home Sabol and Davidson to win the game for the Rays. 

Pitching

Boston

Connelly Early went two innings he walked just one and didn’t allow a hit. He struck out one. Zack Kelly was next out of the pen. In his one inning, he allowed a hit and struck out two. Kyle Keller was next for Boston and he didn’t allow a base runner in his lone inning. Wyatt Olds made his third appearance of the spring allowing a hit and a walk; he struck out one. Noah Song then had the sixth in which he walked one and struck out one. Jeremy Wu-Yelland walked one. T.J. Sikemma got the eighth and they started the ninth going 1.2 innings allowing the tying run to reach. He allowed a hit, a run, and struck out one. Calvin Bickerstaff was the last pitcher for Boston allowing the game-winning hit. He allowed two hits and a run along with taking the loss. 

Tampa Bay

Drew Rasmussen got the ball for the Rays. In two innings he allowed one hit and struck out three. Ian Seymour was next and went two innings allowing two hits and striking out two. Mason Englert went two innings not allowing a base runner and struck out one. Jesse Scholtens in his two innings allowed two hits and struck out three. Trevor Martin had the ninth allowing the only run for the Red Sox one three hits and struck out one. Rays pitchers didn’t issue a walk. 

Next Up:

The Red Sox are on home tomorrow as they face the Pittsburgh Pirates with first pitch at 1:05 PM EST. The Rays face the Minnesota Twins tomorrow with first pitch at 1:05 PM EST.
