Game Recap: Tigers Walk-off Royals; Win Sixth Straight

In a real nail-biter this afternoon. The Tigers came back from three runs down in the ninth inning to walk off the Royals. The Tigers had to come back from being down or tied late in the game in all three games. The final score of today’s game was 10-9 against Kansas City. The game entered the bottom of the ninth with Detroit down 9-7 when Riley Greene roped a double, scoring two to tie the game at nine, then Colt Keith singled home Greene to secure the victory.

Detroit collected 14 hits, and the Kansas City Royals tallied 13 in the high-scoring game. The Tigers, after the start of the game was delayed, got on the board in the second inning after Spencer Torkelson doubled, scoring one run. Carter Jensen singled, which helped the Royals tie the game at one in the top of the fourth. The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Vierling singled, scoring one run, to give Detroit the lead, 2-1.

Four more Detroit Tigers runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-1. Gleyber Torres doubled, scoring one run; Jahmai Jones singled, scoring one run, and Dillon Dingler homered to left field, scoring two runs.

The Royals flipped the game on its head in the top of the seventh, scoring six runs on six hits to take the lead, 8-6. The biggest blow in the inning was a three-run home run to left field by Salvador Perez on the tenth pitch of the at-bat. Vinnie Pasquantino hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth, adding to the Royals’ lead. In the bottom half, the Tigers stormed back.

Pitching

Connor Seabold earned the win for Detroit. The right-handed pitcher surrendered one hit and one run over 1.1 innings, striking out two and walking none. Lucas Erceg took the loss for the Royals. The reliever went two-thirds of an inning, surrendering three runs on three hits, striking out one, and walking one. Keider Montero got the start for Detroit, surrendering seven hits and four runs over six innings, striking out five and walking none. Kris Bubic stepped on the mound first for Kansas City. The southpaw gave up six hits and five runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking three. Enmanuel De Jesus threw one inning of no-run ball for the Tigers in relief. The pitcher surrendered two hits, striking out one and walking none. 

Offense

Greene and Dingler were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for Detroit. Torres, Torkelson, and Vierling each collected multiple hits for the Tigers. Perez drove the middle of the lineup, leading Kansas City with four runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-4 on the day. Bobby Witt Jr. led Kansas City with three hits in five at-bats. Jensen collected two hits for the Royals in five at-bats.

Player of the Game

Riley Greene had a big day for the Tigers. His double tied the game, and he scored the winning run. He finished the game going 3-4 with two RBI, two runs scored, and two doubles.
