Funderburk Optioned: Minnesota Twims Trim Down Roster With Three Moves

The Twins make three moves to trim down their roster as they move closer to Opening Day. They announced they had optioned Kody Funderburk. Two others were also optioned today. This is as they head into the last stretch of spring training. They lost today in Grapefruit League action to the Boston Red Sox six to five.

Kody Funderburk -LHP

The Minnesota Twins have trimmed down their roster by optioning Funderburk to the Triple-A St. Paul Saints today. Kody has pitched in six games this spring for the Twins. He worked in 7.2 innings striking out eight and finishing with a 4.70 ERA. Last season he made 27 appearances for the Twins recording one win and zero losses. Over 34.2 innings he struck out 32, walked 15, had five holds, and one save. He ended 2024 with a 6.49 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP.

Zebby Matthews – RHP

The Minnesota Twins have optioned Zebby Matthews today. They are sending him to Triple-A to start his year with the St. Paul Saints. Zebby ends spring training appearing in four games, making two starts and pitching 9.1 innings of work. He didn’t allow a run and struck out 12 during his time with the Twins in spring training. Last season he made nine starts for the Twins working 37.2 innings. He finished with one win, four losses, and a 6.69 ERA in 2024.

David Festa – RHP

The Minnesota Twins have optioned Festa to Triple-A where he will start the year with St. Paul. He finished spring training with zero wins and one loss. He appeared in four games and made three starts. In 11.1 innings of work, he struck out 11 and had an 11.91 ERA. Festa made 13 starts last year for the Twins with a two-win and six-loss record. He struck out 77 over 64.1 innings and finished with a 4.90 ERA.

The Twins used all three of these pitchers last year as they suffered plenty of injuries to their pitching staff. David Festa, Zebby Matthews, and Kody Funderburk all will be starting in Triple-A this year. They will all look to improve on last year. They are preparing for the call to help the big league club when the time comes.
