The Detroit Tigers will start a three-game series tonight against the Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park in Detroit, MI. The Tigers are coming off a series win over the weekend against the Texas Rangers. They sit tied for first place with the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central. Ahead of tonight’s game, they suffered a major blow as reigning American League Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal is having surgery. He is having surgery to remove loose bodies in his left elbow. The Tigers have recalled right-handed pitcher Ty Madden from Triple-A Toledo to take Skubal’s spot. Skubal will be out indefinitely, and he was expected to start tonight, but Detroit will go with an opener in Tyler Holton.

Tarik Skubal

Skubal this season in seven starts in 3-2. He has a 2.70 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP, and 45 strikeouts in 43.1 innings. The back-to-back Cy Young winner appeared in 62 starts over those two seasons, going 31-10 with a 2.30 ERA, a 0.91 WHIP, and 469 strikeouts in 287.1 innings. In 144 career appearances with 141 of those coming as starts, going 57-39. He has a 3.06 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP, and 934 strikeouts in 810 innings.

Ty Madden

Madden this season in six appearances, with five coming as starts, is 2-0. He posts a 4.71 ERA, a 1.57 WHIP, and 21 strikeouts in 21 innings. He’s made six appearances with the Tigers, going 1-1. He has a 4.30 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 23 innings.
