The Detroit Tigers, ahead of today’s Grapefruit League game, made their sixth round of roster cuts as they trim their roster down for Opening Day, which is just two weeks from today. They reassigned right-handed pitcher Tyler Mattison and Cole Waites and left-handed pitcher Bryan Sammons to minor league camp, where the three are expected to start the season in Triple-A with Toledo. The Tigers’ MLB camp roster is now at 45 players as they need to get it down to 26 for opening day.

Tyler Mattison
Mattison, in four spring training games, posted a 2.70 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, and had six strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Last season, he pitched across four levels, pitching at Single-A, High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A. He appeared in 37 games, with one of those coming as a start, going 4-3 with a 4.38 ERA, a 1.56 WHIP, and 44 strikeouts in 39 innings.
Cole Waites
Waites in five spring training games posted a 4.50 ERA, a 2.75 WHIP, and four strikeouts in four innings. He pitched last season in Triple-A and rookie ball in the Giants organization. In five appearences he didn’t allow a run on five hits; he walked two and struck out three in 4.2 innings.
Bryan Sammons
Sammons appeared in three games, with one coming as a start. He went 1-1 with an 8.10 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, and three strikeouts in 6.2 innings. He pitched in Japan last season, appearing in 24 games, going 9-6. Sammons had a 3.43 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, and 100 strikeouts in 120.2 innings.
