Detroit Tigers Notebook: McGonigle Saves The Day, Skubal Rehab, and More

The Detroit Tigers picked up a win in the series finale against the Mariners, improving to 27–39. They’re 9.7 games back of the Cleveland Guardians for the American League Central. They’re five games back of the Blue Jays for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

The Mariners got on the board first in the third. The Tigers knotted the game up with a solo home run from Kevin McGonigle. The Mariners would tack on two more in the sixth to make it 3-1. The Tigers had the bases loaded in the sixth, but Seattle got out of the jam and then added a run at the top of the seventh to make it 4-1. The Tigers got back in the game in the seventh with a triple from Wenceel Perez that drove home two. The Mariners got three outs and stranded Perez at third. In the bottom of the ninth with runners on second and third, Kevin McGonigle singled home both runs to walk off the Mariners.

Jack Flaherty went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out seven. The bullpen combined to go four innings, allowing a run on five hits. They walked one and struck out four.

Standout Performer

Kevin McGonigle led the way, going 2-4 with his home run in the fourth and his walk-off single in the ninth. He had driven in three of the five Tigers’ runs in the win.

The Tigers are now 5-1 in June. They’re averaging 6.2 runs per game while allowing 3.7 runs per game. They could be heading towards a road trip that would include a fully healthy starting rotation. They face the Twins for three games this week, then hit the road for six games. Those six games could have a rotation of Flaherty, Tarik Skubal, and Casey Mize. Justin Verlander will make a rehab start on Wednesday with Toledo, and he could be back for the Houston series, which could look like Troy Melton, Framber Valdez, and Verlander.

  • Lakeland Flying Tigers (A): Charlie Christensen went four scoreless innings, allowing a hit, no walks, and striking out eight in a 5-3 win over the Mighty Mussels.
  • FCL Tigers (ROK): The FCL Tigers were off today; they’re back tomorrow against the FCL Blue Jays.
