Cincinnati Reds All-Star Selection

Cincinnati Reds All-Star Selection

The Mid-Summer Classic is right around the corner, and today, both the American and National League rosters were announced. The game will be played on Tuesday, July 16th, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The Cincinnati Reds have had a mediocre first half and will only be sending one player to the game this year after the voting has finished.

SS – Elly De La Cruz

De La Cruz will be a reserve when the National League team takes the field next Tuesday night in Texas. The selection is no surprise, as he has been one of the lone bright spots for the Reds this season. He has played in 98 games so far this season and is slashing .235/.300/.410 with a .710 OPS this season. He has scored 67 runs this year, has 15 doubles, seven triples, 13 home runs, 44 RBIs, and 35 steals so far this year in his first full year with the Reds. Trea Turner got the start for the National League, but De La Cruz should get the chance to finish out the game for the National League and perhaps have an opportunity to show the rest of the league what he can do once he’s on base!

Overview

While the starting nod could’ve been given to De La Cruz with Turner missing time already this year, a reserve spot is better than nothing. With his 35 stolen bases, Cruz has shown the league what he’s capable of when on base. He creates havoc and generates runs on his own, which should be interesting to watch in this all-star game. I’d love to see him get on base and steal second and third on the big stage so that the rest of the MLB loyal fans can see this kid’s talent. Be sure to tune in on July 16th when the League best face off in the mid-summer classic!!
