The Chicago Cubs are in the middle of a rough slide as they have lost five straight games. After being swept by the Brewers in a three game series to start the week. The Cubs have a three game series starting with the Astros today. The Cubs have fallen a game and a half behind the Brewers. They are no longer in the top spot in the NL Central heading into the weekend. Today, before their series opener with the Houston Astros, the team announced Matt Shaw’s placement on the ten-day injured list. Instead of calling up Kevin Alcantara, the Cubs have recalled Pedro Ramirez from Triple-A Iowa today.

Pedro Ramirez

Ramirez had a terrific spring for the Cubs and has continued to play well in Triple-A. This spring, manager Craig Counsell noted Ramirez’s impressive performance. He said Ramirez would end up helping the Cubs in 2026. Ramirez has played in 43 games so far this season for Iowa. He has one double, one triple, nine home runs, and RBI this season. He has slashed .312/.395/.547. Ramirez is also a threat on the base paths with 19 stolen bases in 21 attempts this season. I had mentioned in a late March article that Ramirez would be one to watch this season.

Matt Shaw

The Cubs have placed Matt Shaw on the ten-day injured list with mid-back tightness. Shaw has played in a super utility role this season and has appeared in 42 games for the Cubs. He has a .242/.291/.400 slashline. Shaw has three home runs, six doubles, and 12 RBI this season for the Cubs.
