The Chicago Cubs wrap up their series against the Texas Rangers today. They are looking to secure their second sweep of the season, having swept the Athletics a week ago. The Cubs will have Shota Imanaga on the mound, he is 2-0 with a 0.98 ERA. The Rangers counter with Tyler Mahle, who is 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA. The Cubs today placed lefty Justin Steele on the 15-day injured list with tendinitis in his left elbow. Ethan Roberts has been recalled from Triple-A to take his spot on the roster.

Steele, through four starts, is 3-1 with a 4.76 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP, and 21 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. His last start came on Monday. Steele went seven shutout innings, giving up three hits; he walked two and struck out eight. Roberts, at Iowa this season, has appeared in three games. He is yet to allow a run on four hits; he also hasn’t issued a walk and has eight strikeouts.

Justin Steele

The Cubs drafted Steele in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB draft. In his career, he has made 102 appearances in his career with 91 of those coming as starts. He is 32-22 with a 3.30 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and 517 strikeouts in 506.2 innings. Steele was an All-Star in 2023 and finished fifth in Cy Young voting. He went 16-5 with a 3.06 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and 176 strikeouts in 173.1 innings. Last season, he made 24 starts, going 5-5 with a 3.07 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and 135 strikeouts in 134.2 innings.

Ethan Roberts

Roberts has been in the Cubs system since 2019. He has made 30 appearances with Chicago, going 1-2 with a 4.72 ERA, a 1.66 WHIP, and 35 strikeouts in 34.1 innings. In 114 games in the minors, he is 8-7 with a 2.81 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP, and 168 strikeouts in 150.2 innings. Last season, he pitched at rookie ball, Double-A, and Triple-A, making 16 appearances, posting 1 .50 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and 21 strikeouts in 18 innings. He also made 21 appearances for Chicago, going 1-1 with a 3.71 ERA, a 1.54 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts in 26.2 innings.
