Red Sox Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Boston Red Sox start a three-game series at Fenway Park tonight against the Houston Astros. Ahead of today’s game, they activated newly acquired left-handed pitcher Steven Matz. To make room for Matz, the Red Sox optioned left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino to Triple-A Worcester.

Steven Matz

Matz in 32 games for the Cardinals, with two of those coming as starts, is 5-2. He posted a 3.44 ERA, a 2.88 FIP, a 1.18 WHIP, and 47 strikeouts in 55 innings. He’s appeared in 225 career games with 172 of those coming as starts. He is 60-62 with a 4.24 ERA, a 4.19 FIP, a 1.32 WHIP, and 928 strikeouts in 982.2 innings.

Brennan Bernardino

Bernardino, in 47 games, with one of those coming as a spot start, is 4-2. He has a 3.09 ERA, a 3.46 FIP, a 1.26 WHIP, and 36 strikeouts in 43.2 innings. In 161 career games with ten coming as starts, he is 10-7. Bernardino posts a 3.47 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, and 150 strikeouts in 147.2 innings. He was a trustworthy arm for Alex Cora to start the season, but has tired out, which sending him down will allow him to rest.
