The Boston Red Sox wrap up their three-game series with the Detroit Tigers tonight. They’re looking to complete their first sweep of the 2026 season. The Red Sox took the first game, 5-4, with a five-run seventh. They took the middle game 10-3 with three runs in the first and five runs in the third. Tonight, they’ll have Sonny Gray returning from injury to make the start. They are activating Gray off the injured list, and to make room for his return, they are optioning left-hander Alec Gamboa to Triple-A Worcester. The Red Sox also announced today that they are sending right-handed pitcher Justin Slaten on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester. Slaten just pitched at Double-A Portland, where he made a start, going one scoreless inning, allowing a hit and striking out two.

Sonny Gray

Gray made five starts with the Red Sox, going 2-1. He has a 4.30 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, and 13 strikeouts in 23 innings. Gray last pitched on April 20th against the Tigers, where he left the game in the third inning. He allowed one run on three hits, walking one and striking out two. In 344 career big league games with 335 of those coming as starts, he’s 127-103 with a 3.59 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, and 1,938 strikeouts in 1,941 innings. He finished second in Cy Young voting in 2023 with the Twins.

Alec Gamboa

Gamboa made his big league debut in last night’s win, retiring all three batters he faced, and he struck out two. In three starts at Triple-A Worcester, he’s 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA, a 1.69 WHIP, and 15 strikeouts in 13 innings.
