The Boston Red Sox won the series opener against the White Sox for their fourth straight win, improving to 41-48. They’re 12.5 games back of the Rays for the American League East. They’re four games back for the final spot in the American League wild card standings.

The Red Sox opened the scoring in the second with a solo home run from Andruw Monasterio, then Ceddanne Rafaela joined the fun with a two-run home run, making it 3-0. They added to their lead in the fourth as Connor Wong reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Jarren Duran to make it 4-0. The White Sox did get a run back on a fielder’s choice, making it 4-1. The Red Sox added to their lead in the eighth with some delayed umpire calls. Willson Contreras doubled home two runs, then Romy Gonzalez doubled home Contreras to make it 7-1. They kept scoring, as Duran singled home Gonzalez to make it 8–1.

Payton Tolle went six scoreless innings, allowing two hits. He walked one and struck out six. The bullpen, consisting of Danny Coulombe, Justin Slaten, Garrett Whitlock, and Ryan Watson, combined to go the final three innings, allowing two hits, a run, a walk, and four strikeouts.

Ceddanne Rafaela went 2-for-5 but had the two-run home run for the Red Sox early in the game.

The Red Sox, with last night’s win and Baltimore’s loss, moved out of last place in the American League East.

A report today said the doctor visits on left-handed pitcher Connelly Early and outfielder Roman Anthony haven’t happened yet, so there’s no update on either of them.

The Red Sox tomorrow night will have Jake Bennett on the mound. He’s 3-3 with a 3.10 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP, and 31 strikeouts in 40.2 innings.
