Boston Red Sox News & Notes 4/28

The Boston Red Sox are currently taking on the Chicago Cubs on Sunday Night Baseball, they currently are tied 4-4 (at the time of publishing) and are looking for their fourth series win out of nine series to start 2024. The one thing the Red Sox are currently dealing with is an abundance of injuries as they are without Brayan Bello, Isaiah Campbell, Lucas Giolito, Nick Pivetta, Garrett Whitlock, Tyler Heineman, Triston Casas, Romy Gonzalez, Vaughn Grissom, and Trevor Story; Story and Giolito will not be back this season, they also have Liam Hendriks on the injured list but he is expected to return by the trade deadline and could provide some depth to the bullpen. Over the weekend they announced that they had acquired Garrett Cooper from the Cubs to help fill the void of losing Casas among calling up Naoyuki Uwasawa which led to Joely Rodriguez being designated for assignment. Some of the injured players however may be coming back as an update was provided by the Red Sox today.

  • Vaughn Grissom expected to make his debut Tuesday.
  • Nick Pivetta will make a rehab start on Thursday going 3-4 innings and then he’ll return.
  • Isaiah Campbell is making progress and will begin a rehab assignment soon.
  • Romy Gonzalez isn’t close to a return.
  • Brayan Bello had his best day throwing yesterday.
  • Garrett Whitlock feeling better but still has pain, not progressing as quick as planned.

Red Sox Update

Vaughn Grissom

Grissom was acquired this offseason from the Braves in the trade that included Chris Sale. He suffered an a groin and hamstring injury in spring training and has been rehabbing in Triple-A Worcester. He has played in eight games and he is hitting .231 with a .663 OPS; he has two doubles, two runs scored, two stolen bases, and four walks.

Nick Pivetta

Pivetta is dealing with a mild right elbow flexor strain. This season through two starts he is 1-1 with a 0.82 ERA, a 2.25 FIP, a 0.81 WHIP, and 13 strikeouts in 11 innings. He had been on both ends of 1-0 games dropping his first start of the season 1-0 to the Mariners and winning his next outing against the A’s 1-0 before heading to the injured list.

Isaiah Campbell

Campebll is dealing with a right shoulder impingement. In seven appearances this season he has struggled which may be due to the injury going 0-1 with a 12.79 ERA, a 6.63 FIP, a 2.05 WHIP, and five strikeouts in 6.1 innings.

Romy Gonzalez

Gonzalez had been the replacement at shortstop along with David Hamilton following the Story injury before ultimately the job went to Ceddanne Rafaela. Gonzalez started at Triple-A Worcester and in seven games he hit .321 with a 1.196 OPS; he had a double, two triples, three home runs, ten RBI, five runs scored, one stolen base, and two walks. That led to him being called up, he played in two games going 1-4 with a run scored, and a walk before he suffered a wrist injury.

Brayan Bello

Bello is dealing with right lat tightness which landed him on the injured list. Bello through five starts before the injury was 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA, a 4.06 FIP, a 1.05 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts in 26.2 innings. He was coming off a fantastic start against the Pirates going six shutout innings, giving up one hits; he walked two and struck out seven.

Garrett Whitlock

Whitlock is dealing with an oblique injury. This season through four starts he is 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA, a 3.32 FIP, a 1.14 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 18.1 innings. Whitlock looked good as a starter before his injury.
