Boston Red Sox Best Free Agent Fit

Red Sox News and Notes 3/1

The Boston Red Sox are already known to need pitching, pitching, pitching, and more pitching this offseason, and MLB.com’s very own Mark Feinsand noted the best fit for them. With Aaron Nola already off the board, the best available free-agent starting pitchers are Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who has been posted and will be signed between now and January 4th, Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, Sonny Gray, and Eduardo Rodriguez. Feisand said that Snell would best fit the Red Sox needs in free agency.

Blake Snell By The Numbers

Snell started his career with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he spent the first five years of his career making 108 starts, going 42-30 with a 3.24 ERA, a 3.51 FIP, a 1.23 WHIP, a 1.0 HR/9, a 3.8 BB/9, and a 10.5 K/9. In 2020, the Rays traded him to the San Diego Padres for prospects, and he spent the last three seasons making 83 starts, going 29-25 with a 3.15 ERA, a 3.36 FIP, a 1.23 WHIP, a 0.9 HR/9, a 4.5 BB/9, and an 11.9 K/9. In 2023, he made 32 starts, going 14-9 with a 2.25 ERA, a 3.44 FIP, a 1.18 WHIP, a 0.8 HR/9, a 5.0 BB/9, and an 11.7 K/9, which led to him being the National League Cy Young award winner. In the postseason in his career, he has made 12 appearances, with ten of those being starts going 4-3 with a 3.33 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, a 1.3 HR/9, a 4.3 BB/9, and an 11.3 K/9. In his career against the American League East, aside from the Red Sox, he has made 41 starts, going 13-12 with a 3.51 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, a 4.1 BB/9, and a 10.7 K/9.

  1. Let’s not resign all our former retreads. Let’s start with a clean slate. Trade Chris sale for draft picks. Yamamoto, Montgomery, Bello, Pivetta, Wacha xception! That’s a good starting five. 1 or 2 right handed power hitters !!! I’d like a chances in the playoffs with this team
