Alex Bregman Propels Red Sox Into Win Column

The Boston Red Sox, entering tonight’s game, dropped six of their last eight games. They suffered a brutal 16-1 loss to the Rays last night. They got back in the win column tonight Alex Bregman’s bat. Bregman went 5-5 with four RBI and two runs scored behind two home runs. It was his first-ever five-hit game. Kristian Campbell and Wilyer Abreu were the only ones hitless tonight.

Scoring

Bregman got the Red Sox on the board early as he singled home Rafael Devers in the first inning. In the second, the Red Sox tacked on more as Jarren Duran hit a two-run home run to make it 3-0. The Rays got one back with a Jonathan Aranda solo home run in the bottom half of the second. Bregman was at it again in the top of the third with a solo home run, his third of the year.

Ceddanne Rafaela then tacked on more with an RBI single to make it 5-1. Bregman added another RBI with a double in the top half of the fourth. The Rays added another in the fourth as Kameron Misner drove home Junior Caminero on a sacrifice fly. Bregman hit another solo home run to make it 7-2. The Rays made things interesting in the ninth. The Rays added runs on an RBI groundout by Taylor Walls and a single from Yandy Diaz.

Pitching

Walker Buehler got the start tonight for the Red Sox, making his fourth start of the season. He went five innings, giving up two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out three. Justin Wilson went one inning, giving up a hit and walking one, and he struck out two. Zack Kelly got 2.2 innings. He allowed two runs on three hits. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out four. Aroldis Chapman got the final out to secure the win.

Next Up

The Red Sox and Rays will play the final game of their three-game series tomorrow at 7:05 PM EST, The Red Sox haven’t announced a start for the finale. The way the bullpen was used on Monday. Tomorrow’s starter may be Sean Newcomb. The Rays will go with Zack Littell, who is 0-3 with a 6.88 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts in 17 innings. After tomorrow, the Red Sox will return home for a four-game series against the Chicago White Sox, which includes their traditional Patriots’ Day game on Monday, with an 11:10 AM start time.
