St. Louis Cardinals Roster Moves 5/31

St. Louis Cardinals Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The St. Louis Cardinals are 27-27 on the year entering play today and are in second place in the National League Central five games back from the Milwaukee Brewers. They just took two of three from the Cincinnati Reds and will look to keep the momentum going against the National League East-leading Philadelphia Phillies in a three-game weekend series with a preview right here! Ahead of the series they have announced three roster moves today.

RHP – Giovanny Gallegos

The Cardinals have sent Gallego on a rehab assignment to down to Triple-A for the Memphis Redbirds. He has pitched in 13 games so far this season for the Cardinals with two wins and one loss. He also has two holds and is one-for-one with saves opportunities this year. He has a 12.00 ERA and a 2.33 WHIP this year over nine innings of work. He has allowed 14 hits, 12 earned runs, five home runs, seven walks, and struck out 13 batters. He has been on the 15-day injured list since May, 6th with a right shoulder impingement.

OF – Lars Nootbaar

The Cardinals have placed Nootbaar on the 10-day injured list retroactive to May, 30th with an Oblique strain. This is Nootbaar’s second stint on the injured list this year, the first time was for a left rib contusion back in early April. He has played in 39 games this year for the Cardinals. He has 141 at-bats, 14 runs scored, 33 hits, seven doubles, one triple, five home runs, 19 RBIs, 22 walks, 34 strikeouts, and three stolen bases. He has slashed .234/.337/.404 with a .741 OPS during those 39 games this year.

SS – Jose Fermin

The Cardinals have recalled Fermin from the Memphis Redbirds today ahead of their weekend series with the Philadelphia Phillies. He has played in nine games so far this year for the Cardinals with 15 at-bats, one run scored, three hits, two walks, two strikeouts, and one stolen base. During his time with the Cardinals, he has slashed .200/.333/.200 with an OPS of .533 this year.

Wrap Up:

Losing Nootbaar certainly is not ideal, right now, but hopefully, they can get him back quickly and have him stay healthy the rest of the way. They will need a healthy Nootbaar if they plan to continue to contend in the National League Central. I will be interested to see how Gallegos fairs in his rehab stink this weekend with the Memphis Redbirds. A healthy and effective Gallegos is a boost for this Cardinals bullpen, With the Team at .500 a third of the way through the season, there is hope that they can make a return to the playoffs this year if they can remain healthy and make a move or two near the deadline to add to their final push.
