Red Sox Bullpen Blows It

The Boston Red Sox suffered another loss to the Seattle Mariners last night by a score of 4-3 in ten innings. The Red Sox are now 1-2 and very well could and should be 3-0. The offense failed to show up on Friday night and last night it was the bullpen. Let’s get into the game itself.

Kutter Crawford

Crawford made his first start of the season going six innings giving up one run which was unearned on three hits; he walked one and struck out seven. Crawford looked good and continued to get stronger as he went on.

Bullpen

The Red Sox used five pitchers out of the pen last night using Isaiah Campbell who looked fantastic going one inning and not allowing a run, a hit, or a walk, and he struck out two. Then it was Chris Martin who continued to do what he does going an inning, not allowing a run on one hit; he also didn’t walk anyone and struck out one. Greg Weissert got the ninth and he didn’t allow a hit or a run; he walked one and struck out two. The tenth is where things got interesting with the Red Sox up 3-1 it was Joely Rodriguez on to get the save instead of Kenley Jansen who later said he was dealing with something and that if he threw last night he would have been out for two weeks, that’s the same pitcher who voiced his displeasure with the Red Sox offseason but didn’t want to pitch in a game they could have won, nonetheless it was Rodriguez who personally I would have rather had Brennan Bernadino on the roster instead and also on the mound in that situation but that wasn’t the case. Rodriguez went 0.1 innings giving up three runs, two earned on two hits; he didn’t walk anyone or strike anyone out. Justin Slaten came in after and he gave up the walk-off single to Julio Rodriguez and the run was charged to Rodriguez. That was a tough spot for Slaten to be put into making his big league debut.

Ceddanne Rafaela

Rafaela continues to impress both defensively and at the plate. In the Bottom of the Fourth, he made a great diving catch on Cal Raleigh. In the next half inning, he led off the inning with a double then would advance to third on a fly out by Emmanuel Valdez, then he would score on a ground out by Pablo Reyes to tie the game at 1-1. He also scored a run in the Top of the Tenth on a Reyes single.

Rafael Devers

Devers missed his second consecutive game as he is dealing with a shoulder issue. He is expected to be back in the lineup today. With Devers out last night, it was Pablo Reyes at third base and he committed an error that allowed J.P. Crawford to reach he would later score which gave the Mariners their only run in the first nine innings, if that play doesn’t happen it’s a 1-0 Red Sox win based on how Crawford had pitched and the bullpen looked before Rodriguez coming in.

Wrap Up:

The Red Sox finish their series today with the Mariners as they send Garrett Whitlock to the mound to take on Bryce Miller for Seattle.
