Before being drafted, he was playing in the Sunbelt Baseball League for the 2022 Atlanta Blues, where he slashed .273/.412/.382 with a .794 OPS; he had four doubles, one triple, ten RBI, 18 runs scored, six stolen bases, and 13 walks.

Johnson played for the Pirates rookie ball team and Single-A Bradenton. He played in 23 games and slashed .222/.366/.365 with a .731 OPS; he had six doubles, one home run, six RBI, seven runs scored, six stolen bases, and 16 walks.
