Hagen Smith was born in Tyler, Texas on August 19, 2003. He played high school baseball at Bullard High School in Bullard, TX. He was the top-ranked LHP and the fourth overall player in Texas in 2021. In high school he played in 73 games, at the plate he hit .289 with nine doubles, five triples, 35 RBI, and 34 runs scored. On the mound, he appeared in 27 games going 14-1 with a 1.16 ERA, nine complete games, eight shutouts, a 0.75 WHIP, and 258 strikeouts in 120.1 innings. Smith was the 12th-ranked LHP nationally and the 71st overall player in the country. He committed to play college baseball at the University of Arkansas.

Smith in his first season at Arkansas in 2022 made 20 appearances. Fifteen of those were starts. He went 7-2 with a 4.66 ERA, a 1.48 WHIP, and 90 strikeouts in 77.1 innings. In 2023 in his second season, he made 18 appearances, 11 of those appearances were starts. He went 8-2 with a 3.64 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP, and 109 strikeouts in 71.2 innings. In 2024 he made 16 starts going 9-2 with a 2.04 ERA, a 0.89 WHIP, and 161 strikeouts in 84 innings.
