Peguero Returns to the Big Leagues

Liover Peguero, a former top prospect in the Pirates organization, returns to Pittsburgh after spending time refining his game in Triple-A. In 72 games with Indianapolis this season, he’s hitting .251 with 14 doubles, a triple, five home runs, 36 RBI, 35 runs scored, eight stolen bases, and 24 walks. His improved plate discipline and consistent defense at shortstop earned him another shot at the major league level.

This marks Peguero’s second stint with the Pirates in 2025. Earlier in the season, he appeared in four games, hitting .222 with a .522 OPS.

Infield Flexibility and Youth Movement

With Peguero back on the roster, the Pirates gain added flexibility in the infield. He can play both shortstop and second base, giving interim manager Don Kelly options depending on matchups and rest days. As the team focuses on development and looks ahead to 2026, players like Peguero remain a crucial part of the rebuilding puzzle.

In recent weeks, the Pirates have continued to lean on their youth. They’ve given extended looks to several prospects, including Termarr Johnson and Jared Triolo. By bringing Peguero back, Pittsburgh reinforces that commitment to player development and internal growth.

What’s Next for the Pirates?

The Pirates will look to integrate Peguero back into the lineup quickly, possibly giving him regular starts in the middle infield. As trade deadline rumors swirl, expect more roster movement in the coming days. However, adding Peguero now ensures the team stays focused on evaluating its internal talent.

As the season progresses, the spotlight will remain on Pittsburgh’s young core, and Peguero will once again have the opportunity to prove he belongs.
