The Philadelphia Phillies are calling up their 17th-ranked prospect and tenth-ranked pitching prospect, right-handed pitcher Alex McFarlane. McFarlane is coming from their Double-A affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils. In 32 appearances, he’s 1-1 with 12 saves in 13 opportunities, a 2.06 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and 47 strikeouts in 35 innings. He’s tied for second in games, and he’s tied for the league lead in the Eastern League in saves.

The Phillies drafted McFarlane 122nd overall in the 2022 MLB Amateur Draft out of Miami. In three seasons with the Hurricanes, he appeared in 49 games, with 12 of those coming as starts, going 7-5 with a 4.35 ERA, a 1.40 WHIP, and 120 strikeouts in 91 innings. He spent two summers playing in the Cape Cod Baseball League with Chatham. In 12 games, with three coming as starts, he went 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, and 44 strikeouts in 35 innings.
He first reported to Clearwater, where he pitched in 2022 and 2023. He made 19 starts, going 0-7 with a 6.17 ERA, a 1.69 WHIP, and 81 strikeouts in 58.1 innings. Last season, he appeared in 28 games with 18 coming as starts between High-A and Double-A; the 18 starts all came at High-A. In his 28 games, he went 4-9 with a 4.84 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP, and 82 strikeouts in 80 innings.
