Opinion: The Toronto Blue Jays Should Acquire This Left-Handed Bat

Toronto Blue Jays News & Notes 3/15

The Toronto Blue Jays have gotten off to a slow start and after last night’s 10-1 blowout loss at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies to start their two game series, they dropped to 16-20 to start the season. Last night’s game saw their ace Jose Berrios bring in his 1.44 ERA and he left with a 2.85 ERA after giving up eight runs in 3.2 innings. they need to make a move before this season gets away from them, so what more could it be? The Miami Marlins are currently in sell mode and are selling pieces early in the season. The other day they traded Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres for four prospects, now reports have come out that Jazz Chisholm will be the next player made available and he makes perfect sense to add to the Blue Jays lineup with his versatility, he can play second base or shortstop or outfield which he is currently playing for the Marlins. The Marlins may be looking for position player prospects with their system currently loaded with pitching. Moving one player from the top ten and two bottom prospects may be just enough to get the deal done.

Jazz Chisholm By The Numbers

Chisholm is in his fifth season in the big leagues spending all his time with the Marlins. For his career he has a .245 average with a .754 OPS; he has 49 doubles, 12 triples, 58 home runs, 175 RBI, 184 runs scored, 67 stolen bases, and 102 walks. Last season he posted a career high in home runs with 19. He was an All-Star in 2022 despite playing in only 60 games. His best session was in 2021 when he had 115 hits, 20 doubles, 18 home runs, 53 RBI, 70 runs scored, 23 stolen bases, and 34 walks. This season through 37 games he is hitting .243 with a .734 OPS; he has six doubles, one triple, five home runs, 20 RBI, 17 runs scored, eight stolen bases, and 16 walks.

Wrap Up:

Sliding Chisholm to the leadoff spot could allow the Blue Jays to trot out a lineup along the lines of

  • 2B – Jazz Chisholm
  • RF – George Springer
  • 1B – Vladimir Guerrer Jr.
  • 3B – Justin Turner
  • SS – Bo Bichette
  • LF – Daulton Varsho
  • DH – Danny Jansen
  • C – Alejando Kirk
  • CF – Kevin Kiermaier
  • BN – Isiah Kiner-Falefa
  • BN – Daniel Vogelbach
  • BN – Davis Schneider / Ernie Clement
  • BN – Cavan Biggio

Chisholm has been batting leadoff for the Marlins in the last four games and over that stretch, he’s gone 5-14 with a double, a home run, two RBI, four runs scored, a walk, and three stolen bases. The addition of Chisholm would provide the Blue Jays with depth and a very deep lineup from top to bottom.
