MLB Spring Training Recap: Four Run Third Leads Red Sox to Grapefruit League Win Over Twins

The Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins met for the second time this spring today. The Red Sox won the first meeting 7-2 on Saturday.

Red Sox vs. Twins

Scoring

The Red Sox opened the scoring in the top of the third. Ceddanne Rafaela doubled to leadoff the inning, Jarren Duran moved him over on a groundout, and Rafaela would later score on a Wilyer Abreu single. Andruw Monasterio would draw a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0 Boston. Brendan Rodgers then singled home Abreu and Nick Sogard to add to the Red Sox lead and make it 4-0. The Red Sox added another run in the fourth as Roman Anthony led off with a double and moved to third on a Duran single before Carlos Narvaez drove him in on a sacrifice fly. Minnesota got on the board with a two-run double by Luke Keaschall, who drove in Ryan Kreidler and Trevor Larnach, making it 5-2. The Twins made it a two-run game in the eighth when Tanner Schobel singled home Kaelen Culpepper.

Pitching

Boston

Johan Oviedo got the start. He went 1.2 innings, allowing a hit and walking three in his Red Sox debut. He did strikeout one. Jay Allmer came in and got the final out of the first inning. Garrett Whitlock got the third, and he didn’t allow a base runner and struck out one. Justin Slaten got the fourth; he allowed a hit and struck out one. Tyler Uberstine was next for Boston, and he would allow two unearned runs in 0.2. He allowed a hit and a walk; he did record a strikeout. P.J. Labriola finished the inning off with a strikeout.

Jake Bennett got the seventh and started the eighth inning. In his 1.1 inning he allowed a run on three hits and struck out one. Michael Sansone finished off the eighth, allowing a hit and striking out one. Tayron Guerrero came on for a save situation for the Red Sox in the ninth. He allowed a hit and struck out one.

Minnesota

Kody Funderburk went one inning in his spring debut. He allowed two hits and struck out one. Andrew Chafin got the second, and he got out of a jam after he walked two. Justin Topa had the third, and he last 0.2 innings, giving up four runs on two hits and three walks; he struck out one. Eston Stull went 1.1 innings, giving up a run on three hits. Eric Orze, Matt Bowman, and Trent Baker had the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, and none of them allowed a base-runner. Jaylen Nowlin got the eighth, and he walked one but struck out two. Xander Hamilton got the ninth; he allowed a hit and struck out one.

Next Up:

The Red Sox will face the Tampa Bay Rays tomorrow at Fort Myers with first pitch at 1:05 PM EST. It’ll be Garrett Crochet’s first start of the spring. The Twins will face the Pittsburgh Pirates on the road at 1:05 PM EST.
