Minnesota Twins Roster Moves 7/31

Twins Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

With the Twins being extremely quiet at the deadline many fans are frustrated with management as the team is fighting for a wild card spot currently and have lost their last two games against the New York Mets. After today’s game, they will have tomorrow off, before starting a weekend series at home against the Chicago White Sox. The Twins entered today with a 58-48 record are six and a half games behind the Cleveland Guardians and are sitting in the fifth playoff spot as of the start of today. Ahead of the series finale with the Mets the Twins have announced several roster moves.

RHP – Trevor Richards

The newly acquired Richards has been activated to the roster following his trade from the Toronto Blue Jays. The Twins sent Jay Harry a young SS prospect to the Blue Jays in return for the relief pitcher. Richards has pitched in 45 games for the Blue Jays this year with two wins, one loss, and seven holds. In 52.1 innings of work, he allowed 27 earned runs, and 24 walks, struck out 49, and had a 4.64 ERA.

RHP – Brock Stewart

The Twins have placed Stewart on the 15-day injured list retroactive to July, 30th with a Right shoulder strain. In 16 games with the Twins Stewart has a 5.17 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched with nine earned runs allowed, eight walks, and struck out 20.

Moves from 7/30

RHP- Josh Staumont

The Twins designated Staumont for assignment yesterday. In 25 games this year Staumont had one win, one hold, and a 3.70 ERA. In 24.1 innings pitched he allowed 14 walks, and struck out 18 in those innings worked.

OF – Alex Kirilloff

The Twins transferred Kirilloff to the 60-day injured list yesterday from the 10-day injured list. Kirilloff has been on the injured list with back issues since June, 13th. In 57 games this year he has 20 runs scored, eight doubles, three triples, five home runs, 20 RBIs, 15 walks, and struck out 47 times. He has slashed .201/.270/.384 with a .654 OPS on the season.

RHP – Randy Dobnak

The Twins purchased the contract of Dobnak yesterday from the Triple-A St. Paul Saints. He has not appeared in a major league game since the 2021 season with the Twins. He has spent the past two seasons pitching in Triple-A with the St. Paul Saints. This year he has nine wins, five losses in 19 starts, and a 3.61 ERA. He has pitched in 21 games total with St. Paul pitching in 99.2 innings allowing 40 earned runs, and 43 walks, and has struck out 102 hitters.

Overview

With the Twins playing well enough to hold a wild card spot, many fans wanted the team to go out and get another arm for the rotation or perhaps even a bat to help give the bench some depth before getting into the August. The Twins in my opinion missed out on an opportunity to strengthen their roster giving them a solid chance to compete in October. As is it appears the management team was not willing to pay the price for some of the rotation arms as the clock ran out. Richards is an average bullpen arm and was the only trade they made yesterday, which was very lackluster and left many wondering what was management thinking around this deadline. Just seems as if the Twins are content with their team and are happy with where they sit in the standings, and ultimately just were not willing to pay the prices to acquire one of the big arms ahead of the deadline.
