Miami Marlins Ace Undergoes Tommy John Surgery

Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins season wrapped up on Wednesday night after they were swept by the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 and were outscored 11-2. Today it was announced that reigning Cy Young Award winner and Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara had undergone Tommy John surgery. Alcantara made a rehab start a few weeks ago in Triple-A and left that start after some discomfort.

Sandy Alcantara By The Numbers

Alcantara this season has seemed to regress a little bit and maybe that had to do with his arm injury and it progressibly got worse as the season went on. In 2023 he has made 28 starts going 7-12 with a 4.14 ERA, a 4.03 FIP, a 1.21 WHIP, a 1.1 HR/9, a 2.3 BB/9, and a 7.4 K/8 a career low, he also had a 3.4 WAR. Last season in his Cy Young season he made 32 starts going 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA, a 2.99 FIP, a 0.98 WHIP, a 0.6 HR/9, a 2.0 BB/9, an 8.1 K/9, and was a 7.8 WAR. In his career he has made 146 appearances and 138 starts going 41-55 with a 3.32 ERA, a 3.77 FIP, a 1.15 WHIP, a 0.9 HR/9, a 2.7 BB/9, a 7.9 K/9, and was a 20.0 WAR.

Bottom Line:

With Alcantara getting Tommy John when he did, it likely means he will be out for all of 2024, so that means the Marlins will have to rely on Eury Perez, Jesus Luzardo, and Braxton Garrett heavily if they want to return to the postseason and if they do they might be able to add their ace in Alcantara back to their rotation which is a bonus that most likely no other team in the 2024 postseason could say.
