Just How Good Has Brenton Doyle Been?

Brenton Doyle has undoubtedly been having a breakout season and has been one of the best players on the Colorado Rockies this season. Thus far in 2024 Brenton Doyle is hitting .267 with 20 home runs, 60 RBI, and 24 stolen bases. The Rockies now have two players from the 2019 draft class who have hit 20 home runs in the 2024 season, Michael Toglia and Brenton Doyle. Doyle currently leads the Rockies in batting average, home runs, RBI, stolen bases, and WAR. Now being a good player on one of the worst teams in the league doesn’t always mean that that player is good in the big picture of the entire league. Rockies fans could be asking themselves, just how good has Brenton Doyle actually been? Well, after doing a deeper dive into Doyle’s basic and advanced statistics I was extremely impressed. There are currently 18 qualified centerfielders in the MLB and in most statistical categories you can find Doyle towards the top of those lists. Below is where Doyle stacks up against the rest of the league.

Basic stats : Home runs 3rd (20), Stolen Bases 4th (24), Batting Average 5th (.267)
Advanced stats : wRC+ 8th (105), WAR 4th (3.1), OAA 5th (10)

Doyle’s 24 stolen bases are also not just impressive for centerfielders, he ranks 13th amongst qualified players in the entire league. Doyle’s WAR would also rank as the 29th highest in the league. His 10 OAA is also the 7th highest amongst all fielders in the entire league regardless of position. Essentially Brenton Doyle has been one of the more valuable players in the league both offensively and defensively. There are 37 games left in the 2024 season so Doyle will continue to put up big numbers and cement his year as one of the best among centerfielders in Rockies history.

Doyle joined the 20-20 club on August 9th against the Atlanta Braves. This homer puts Doyle in elite territory in Rockies history, this is just the 16th time a Rockies player has had a 20-20 season. Doyle’s 20 home runs are already the 6th most in a season by a Rockies centerfielder. Charlie Blackmon currently has the most home runs by a Rockies centerfielder in a single season with the 37 he hit in 2017. Doyle’s 15 OAA in 2023 and his 10 OAA so far in 2024 rank as the two highest seasons in terms of OAA for the Rockies since 2016. Meaning Doyle has had the 2 best defensive seasons over the last 8 seasons.

Doyle is still only 26 years young and will not be a free agent until 2030 at the earliest. If Doyle were to continue to keep stacking the 20-20 season he would undoubtedly be an all-time great Rocky. Colorado fans should be exhilarated to see how this budding star will continue to improve his game and further cement himself as one of the premier players in the league.
