ITD’s Player of the Month Awards for May

The 2024 baseball season calendar has flipped to June and things are starting to heat up. This is a time when teams will find out if they are still in the race or if they will be sellers and need to look beyond 2024. Some players in May made sure they kept their team in the race so who took home some hardware for May?

American League Hitter – Aaron Judge – New York Yankees

Judge after a slow start to the season has been red hot, in May he played in 28 games hitting .361 with a 1.397 OPS; he had 14 home runs (1st MLB), 27 RBI (2nd MLB), 28 runs scored (1st MLB), a wRC+ of 277 and was a 2.9 WAR (1st MLB). On the season he’s played in 61 games hitting .288 with a 1.075 OPS; he has 18 doubles, 21 home runs, 47 RBI, 43 runs scored, four stolen bases, and 48 walks.

National League Hitter – Bryce Harper – Philadelphia Phillies

Harper has helped the Phillies to the best record in baseball and that continued in May. In 26 games he hit .313 with a .990 OPS; he had seven home runs (T-1st NL), 24 RBI (1st NL), 19 runs scored (T-3rd NL), a wRC+ of 169, and was a 1.4 WAR (T-1st NL). This season in 56 games he is hitting .271 with a .897 OPS; he has ten doubles, 14 home runs, 44 RBI, 35 runs scored, three stolen bases, and 36 walks.

American League Pitcher – Garrett Crochet – Chicago White Sox

Despite the White Sox poor start Crochet was a bright spot in May, a month that the Chicago White Sox went 9-19, Crochet had four of those wins. He went 4-1 in May making five starts, he posted a 0.93 ERA, a 1.93 FIP, a 0.72 WHIP, a K/9 of 11.79, and a BB/9 of 1.55. This season he’s made 13 starts going 5-5 with a 3.49 ERA, a 2.88 FIP, a 0.93 WHIP, a 1.9 BB/9, and a 12.0 K/9.

National League Pitcher – Chris Sale – Atlanta Braves

Sale turned in another solid month in May as he went 5-0 in five starts with a 0.56 ERA, a 0.79 FIP, a 0.78 WHIP, a 0.56 BB/9, and a 12.66 K/9. This season in 11 starts he is 8-1 with a 3.06 ERA, a 2.49 FIP, a 0.94 WHIP, a 1.3 BB/9, and a 10.9 K/9.

American League Rookie – Luis Gil – New York Yankees

Gil just missed out on the pitcher of the month but takes home the rookie of the month award making six starts going 6-0 with a 0.70 ERA, a 2.46 FIP, a 0.67 WHIP, a 2.79 BB/9, and a 10.24 K/9. Gil has been a pleasant surprise for the Yankees this season making 11 starts going 7-1 with a 1.99 ERA, a 2.98 FIP, a 0.94 WHIP, a 4.4 BB/9, and an 11.2 K/9.

National League Rookie – Paul SkenesPittsburgh Pirates

Skenes made his major league debut in May, and he hasn’t disappointed making four starts he is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA, a 2.41 FIP, a 0.90 WHIP, a 2.0 BB/9, and a 12.3 K/9. He will start against the Dodgers on Wednesday in what will be must-see TV.

American League Reliever – Emmanuel Clase – Cleveland Guardians

Clase dominated May and helped the Guardians keep first place as he appeared in 13 games going 2-0 with nine saves, a 0.00 ERA, a 1.44 FIP, a 0.38 WHIP, a 0.69 BB/9, and a 9.69 K/9. This season he’s appeared in 30 games going 3-1 with 18 saves, a 0.31 ERA, a 0.61 WHIP, a 0.6 BB/9, and an 8.9 K/9.

National League Reliever – Robert Suarez – San Diego Padres

Suarez had a dominating month out of the bullpen for San Diego making 12 appearances and going 1-0 with seven saves, a 0.73 ERA, a 2.33 FIP, a 0.57 WHIP, a 0.73 BB/9, and a 9.49 K/9. This season he’s made 25 appearances going 2-0 with 17 saves, a 0.69 ERA, a 2.98 FIP, a 0.73 WHIP, a 2.1 BB/9, and an 8.3 K/9.
