The Detroit Tigers have been full go on addressing their pitching staff this offseason, already adding Kenta Maeda. Tonight, they added another arm by signing Jack Flaherty to a one-year, $14 million contract. Flaherty could be a starter or used in the bullpen if needed.
Jack Flaherty By The Numbers
The Cardinals drafted Flaherty 34th overall in the 2014 draft. He made his big league debut on September 1, 2017, against the San Francisco Giants, going four innings, giving up five runs on eight hits; he walked one and struck out six. In his rookie year, he made six appearances with five starts, going 0-2 with a 6.33 ERA, a 5.27 FIP, a 1.54 WHIP, a 1.7 HR/9, a 4.2 BB/9, and an 8.4 K/9. During his Cardinals tenure, he made 122 appearances with 118 starts, going 41-31 with a 3.58 ERA, a 3.97 FIP, a 1.18 WHIP, a 1.2 HR/9, a 3.4 BB/9, and a 10.0 K/9. He was traded to the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline and appeared in nine games for the Orioles, with seven of those as starts. He was moved to the bullpen due to some struggles he had. With the Orioles, he went 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA, a 4.84 FIP, a 1.67 WHIP, a 1.8 HR/9, a 3.1 BB/9, and a 10.9 K/9. He obviously will need some work, but it’s something that hopefully Chris Fetter can get right, much like he did Michael Lorenzen last season, and the Tigers have struck gold if he can.
