Detroit Tigers Forgo Playoffs: 3 Things To Still Look Forward This Season

The Detroit Tigers today have a split-squad matchup. One is a road game against the Baltimore Orioles and the other is a home game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Matt Manning is making his spring debut against the Orioles while Casey Mize is making his first spring debut against the Blue Jays, it is also Mize’s first trip back to a mound since April 14, 2022, when he went five innings giving up two runs on six hits; walking two and striking out two, he then underwent Tommy John surgery in June and then also had a back issue.

The Tigers released some medical updates today. OF/DH Kerry Carpenter who suffered an injury last week while doing base running drills is finishing up a running progression and will face live pitching today. Catcher Dillon Dingler who is dealing with some right elbow arthroscopy will catch in a game this week. RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long who is dealing with a left groin strain has started a throwing progression over the weekend. He will continue to ramp up his throwing and conditioning this week.  Outfielder Riley Greene who is working his way back from a right elbow strain will play right field today against the Blue Jays. RHP Garrett Hill who is dealing with a right lat/shoulder strain was cleared to ramp up his rehab. Finally, RHP Brendan White finished up a bullpen session yesterday and will throw another bullpen on Thursday.

What To Watch Today

Some other names to look at today, against Baltimore Parker Meadows is starting in center field and batting leadoff, and Justyn-Henry Malloy will be playing left field and batting second. Against Toronto Gio Urshela will make his debut with the Tigers playing third base and batting fourth, Colt Keith will be at second base and batting fifth, and finally, Justice Bigbie will be playing left field and batting eighth as he looks to continue his hot spring as he has a .400 batting average and an .800 OPS entering today following his 3-2 day with an RBI against the Rays on Sunday.
