Javier Baez Walks-off Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers played the second game of their three-game series tonight. The Tigers beat the Red Sox 14-2 last night to start the series. The Red Sox had Brayan Bello on the mound, who entered tonight 2-0 with a 2.02 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP, and 13 strikeouts in 22.1 innings. Tyler Holton got the spot start for the Tigers, who entered tonight 2-2 with a 3.12 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 17.1 innings; all of those stats were out of the bullpen.

Boston Red Sox vs. Detroit Tigers

Scoring

The Tigers once again jumped out to an early lead behind an RBI single by Riley Greene that scored Kerry Carpenter. However, the Red Sox responded in the top of the second when Carlos Narvaez singled home Nick Sogard. Detroit took the lead in the bottom of the third when Narvaez threw the ball into center field, allowing Javier Báez to score and make it 2-1 Tigers. The Red Sox tied it up when Alex Bregman hit a solo home run, his tenth of the season. The Tigers answered right back in the bottom half of the fourth. Spencer Torkelson belted his 11th home run of the season to give the Tigers the lead again.

The lead didn’t last long as the Red Sox tied and took the lead in the top of the fifth. Ceddanne Rafaela doubles home David Hamilton to make it 3-3, then Jarren Duran singles home Rafaela to make it 4-3, Red Sox. In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers took the lead once again. Torkelson drew a walk, then after back-to-back strikeouts, Jace Jung was hit by a pitch. With runners on first and second, Baez hit a three-run home run to make it 6-4 Tigers. The Red Sox tied it back up after a Narvaez single, and David Hamilton hit a two-run home run to make it 6-6.

Extra Innings

The game would go to extra innings where in the top of the tenth Rafaela broke the tie with an RBI ground out which drove home Sogard. In the bottom half of the inning, Trey Sweeney singled home Zach McKinstry to tie the game. The game would go to the 11th where Kristian Campbell hit a two-run home run to make it 9-7 Red Sox. In the bottom half after a single from Jace Jung, Baez hit a three-run home run; his second of the game to win it.

Pitching

Bello for the Red Sox went 4.2 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked two and struck out four. Holton went 1.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit. He didn’t issue a walk and struck out two. The Red Sox used Justin Wilson, Garrett Whitlock, Brennan Bernardino, Justin Slaten, Aroldis Chapman, and Greg Weissert. They combined to go 5.1 innings, giving up five runs on five hits. They walked one and struck out nine. The Tigers used Keider Montero, Brant Hurter, Brennan Hanifee, Tommy Kahnle, Will Vest, and Beau Brieske. They combined to go 9.1 innings, giving up eight runs on 13 hits. They walked two and struck out 12.

Rubber Match: Boston Red Sox vs. Detroit Tigers

The Red Sox and Tigers wrap up their series tomorrow against the Red Sox. The Red Sox will have Hunter Dobbins on the mound. The Tigers counter with their ace and reigning Cy Young Award winner in Tarik Skubal. Dobbins is 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP< and 19 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. Skubal is 4-2 with a 2.08 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP, and 60 strikeouts in 47.2 innings. The Tigers look to complete the sweep.
