David Villar Designated for Assignment by Giants Ahead of Season

The San Francisco Giants host the Detroit Tigers in an exhibition game this evening. They are preparing to kick their 2025 season off on the road against the Cincinnati Reds. Before today’s game, the Giants made a decision. They will designate David Villar for assignment. They are replacing him with a relief pitcher as camp breaks for the 2025 regular season.

David Villar – 2B

The San Francisco Giants have designated Villar for assignment. Villar played in 23 games this spring for the Giants. He had two doubles, three home runs, five RBIs, and struck out 18 times in 45 at-bats. Villar finished spring training with a .200 batting average and a slash line of .265/.444/.709. Last year, Villar played in 11 games for the Giants. Villar had four doubles, one home run, and four RBIs. He had a .257 batting average and a .727 OPS. He played most of last year in Triple-A with the Sacramento River Cats. In 106 games, he had 70 runs scored, 26 doubles, 16 home runs, 77 RBIs, and two steals. He finished the year in Triple-A with a .260 batting average and a .802 OPS.

Lou Trivino – RHP

The Giants have selected the contract of Trivino from the Sacramento River Cats in Triple-A. Trivino pitched in nine games this spring, earning one victory over his 9.1 innings pitched. He finished with a 0.00 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, and struck out 10 batters. Trivino made 11 appearances last for the New York Yankees Minor League affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Triple-A and Somerset Patriots Double-A. Trivino had one win and a 7.50 ERA last year in the minors. The Giants signed him this offseason in free agency. They offered him a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.
