Could the Boston Red Sox Lose Prospects in the Rule 5 Draft

Boston Red Sox Pipeline

The Boston Red Sox, among the other 29 teams in Major League Baseball, have until Tuesday at 6:00 PM to set their 40-man roster. If the eligible players are not added to their respective team’s roster, they will be made available for the Rule 5 Draft, which will be held in Nashville on December 7th.

If a player was signed at 18 or younger, they must be added to the 40-man roster within their first five seasons, or else they become eligible for another organization to draft them. A player who is signed at 19 or older must be protected for four seasons. However, a loophole is if a player is selected, they have to be on the 26-man roster of that team for the full season; if they aren’t, they are offered back to his original team.

The Red Sox have six prospects on the list and they are:

(System Ranking)

  • RHP Wikelman Gonzalez (9)
  • RHP Luis Perales (10)
  • RHP Angel Bastardo (16)
  • LHP Shane Drohan (18)
  • INF Eddinson Paulino (21)
  • OF Allan Castro (30)

Eligible Players By The Numbers

Wikelman Gonzalez

Gonzalez has pitched across five levels during his Red Sox career going 17-12 with a 3.76 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP, a 0.4 HR/9, a 4.8 BB/9, and an 11.6 K/9. in 2023 pitched across two levels, making 25 starts going 9-4 with a 3.96 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP, a 0.6 HR/9, a 5.7 BB/9, and a 13.6 K/9.

Luis Perales

Perales has pitched at four levels, going 4-9 with a 3.32 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, a 0.8 HR/9, a 5.0 BB/9, and an 11.9 K/9. In 2023, across two levels, he went 4-7 in 21 starts with a 3.91 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, a 1.0 HR/9, a 5.0 BB/9, and an 11.5 K/9.

Angel Bastardo

Shane Drohan

Drohan has pitched across four levels, making it as high as Triple-A in 2023. In his Red Sox career, he is 24-19 with a 4.32 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, a 1.1 HR/9, a 4.4 BB/9, and a 9.8 K/9. In 2023, he went 10-7 across Double-A and Triple-A with a 5.05 ERA, a 1.57 WHIP, a 1.5 HR/9, a 5.3 BB/9, and a 9.4 K/9.

Eddinson Paulino

Paulino has played at four levels, advancing each year, and has made it as high as High-A in 2023. In 300 games, he has slashed .271/.362/.449 with a .811 OPS; he has 81 doubles, 22 triples, 25 home runs, 147 RBI, 206 runs scored, 60 stolen bases, and 147 walks. With High-A this season in 115 games, he slashed .257/.338/.421 with a .759 OPS; he had 28 doubles, four triples, 12 home runs, 58 RBI, 68 runs scored, 26 stolen bases, and 50 walks.

Allan Castro

Castro has played across four levels, making it as high as High-A. In 207 games for the Red Sox organization, he has a slash line of .254/.356/.414 with a .770 OPS; he has 44 doubles, 17 triples, 13 home runs, 86 RBI, 112 runs scored, 30 stolen bases, and 108 walks. This season, across two levels, he slashed .261/.368/.405 with a .773 OPS; he had 31 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 46 RBI, 62 runs scored, 19 stolen bases, and 68 walks.

Bottom Line:

Some notable players the Red Sox have received during the Rule Five draft are LHP Joe Jacques, RHP Garrett Whitlock, and INF Jonathan Arauz. The Red Sox also lost RHP Noah Song and RHP Ryan Pressly. Most of the time, these names don’t pan out, but there have been a few that could; the Red Sox’s one weakness in their system is pitching, and it would be tough to lose any of the four pitchers they have in their top 20.
