Cincinnati Reds Sign Southpaw From KBO

The Cincinnati Reds today made some roster moves, placing Nick Lodolo on the injured list and recalling a reliever. This evening, they announced they had signed left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes out of the KBO. Barnes in eight starts this season with Lotte of the KBO went 3-4 with a 5.32 ERA, a 1.40 WHIP, and 38 strikeouts in 45.2 innings. He is currently sidelined with an injury, and Lotte waived him earlier in the season.

Charlie Barnes

The Minnesota Twins drafted Barnes in the fourth round of the 2017 MLB Draft. The Twins drafted him out of Clemson, where he spent three seasons. In 44 appearances, with 34 of those coming as starts, he went 12-11. Barnes posted a 3.85 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, and 220 strikeouts in 220 innings. The 29-year-old spent four seasons in the Twins system, making 77 appearances, with 75 of those coming as starts. He went 23-20 with a 3.71 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and 316 strikeouts in 373.2 innings.

Barnes did make his big league debut in 2021. He made nine appearances, with eight of those coming as starts. Barnes went 0-3 with a 5.92 ERA, a 1.63 WHIP, and 20 strikeouts in 38 innings. He then spent the last four seasons in the KBO, making 94 starts, going 35-32 with a 3.58 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP, and 516 strikeouts in 553 innings of work. He will likely head to eight Double-A or Triple-A.
