Chicago Cubs Roster Moves 4/30/25

Chicago Cubs Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Cubs take on the Pirates tonight in Pittsburgh. The Cubs enter play with a 18-12 record best in the NL Central this year. Before the game, they have announced three roster moves. Chicago has selected the contract of a veteran right-hand pitcher from Iowa. They have sent a lefty arm back to Iowa in the process. In another move, they transferred Javier Assad, a versatile arm, from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. This transfer was due to a left oblique injury.

Chris Flexen

The Chicago Cubs have selected the contract of right-hand pitcher Chris Flexen from Iowa today. Last season he started 30 games for the White Sox with a 3-15 record and a 4.95 ERA. He made a tweak in his arm angle this spring. This adjustment was for his delivery. The results speak for themselves so far, at least in Triple-A. Flexen has made five starts for Iowa. He has three wins and a 1.16 ERA. Flexen has held opposing hitters to a .226 batting average over 23.1 innings this year in Triple-A. He has allowed 19 hits, four runs, three earned runs, eight walks, and struck out 21 batters. Flexen has until tomorrow to be added to the major league roster. If he can continue his minor-league success in Chicago, he could become a valuable arm. Craig Counsell might benefit from this addition this year.

Tom Cosgrove

The Cubs have optioned left-hand pitcher Tom Cosgrove back to Triple-A today ahead of their game with the Pirates. Cosgrove has pitched in one game throwing two innings. He allowed one hit, and one walk, and struck out two during his call-up for the Cubs.

Javier Assad

The Cubs have announced they are transferring Assad from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. Assad has yet to pitch in the regular season for the Cubs in 2025. He suffered a left oblique strain early in spring training camp and is yet to be healthy enough to pitch. He made 29 starts last year for the Cubs. He had a 7-6 record and a 3.73 ERA last season.
