Chicago Cubs Roster Moves 4/23

Chicago Cubs Roster Transactions | Inside The Diamonds

The Cubs are 14-9 on the year and won the first game of their series last night against the Houston Astros. The team is a half-game behind the Brewers in the Central right now and made several moves yesterday before the game.

1B – Garrett Cooper

Cooper was designated for assignment by the Cubs today. Cooper had played in 12 games for the Cubs this season so far getting 37 at-bats. He had three runs scored, 10 hits, one double, one triple, one home run, and six RBIs. He is slashing .270/.341/.432 with a .773 OPS to start the season.

LHP – Drew Smyly

The Cubs placed Smyly on the 15-day injured list with a Right hip impingement. He has appeared in nine games winning two games and on record for two losses as well. His ERA is 4.97 along with a 1.34 WHIP over 12.2 innings of work.

RHP – Kyle Hendricks

The Cubs placed Kyle on the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain. He has started five games this season going winless and has three losses. He has pitched in 21 innings striking out 16, has a 12.00 ERA, and a 2.10 WHIP on the year.

RHP – Hayden Wesneski

The Cubs recalled Hayden from the Iowa Cubs today. Hayden pitched on April, 17th against the Arizona Diamondbacks going four innings allowing one hit, striking out two, and earning the win. He was sent back down to Iowa, but is now back after an impressive performance.

1B – Matt Mervis

The Cubs recalled Mervis from the Iowa Cubs today. He’s played in 18 games with 66 at-bats, eight runs scored, 19 hits, six doubles, five home runs, 13 RBIs, and is slashing .288/.402/.606 with a 1.008 OPS so far.

LHP – Luke Little

The Cubs recalled Little from Triple-A Iowa Cubs today. He has pitched in eight games this year with no record yet. He’s worked in 7.2 innings with a 2.35 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP on the year.

Wrap Up:

With Hendricks being sent to the injured list, hopefully, this means we get to see more of Ben Brown. It’s been obvious that Kyle isn’t feeling just right this season so hopefully some time to rest and heal will allow him to return to old form. Mervis getting called up will be interesting to see if he is slotted in at DH or if he will get some starts at First base. Wesneski pitched fantastic last week and I’m looking forward to him being a weapon out of the bullpen for the Cubs.
