Breaking: Miami Marlins Announce Some Tough News and Moves

The Miami Marlins are off to their worst start in franchise history having dropped their first seven games to start the season, they are currently dealing with a bunch of injuries to their pitching staff as they are missing Edward Cabrera, and Braxton Garrett as well as Sandy Alcantara and now Eury Perez with Alcantara rehabbing and Perez set to undergo surgery which was announced today but both are out for the whole 2024 season. Today the Marlins will try to pick up their first win against the St. Louis Cardinals and they will have Ryan Weathers on the mound making his second start of the season, he suffered the loss going four innings and giving up three earned runs on seven hits; he walked two and struck out five. Opposing Weathers will be Lance Lynn making his second start of the season and in his first start he went four innings and didn’t allow a run on four hits; he walked one and struck out five. Before today’s game, the Marlins made the following roster moves

  • LHP Kent Emanuel designated for assignment
  • INF Jonah Bride optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville
  • INF Emmanuel Rivera activated
  • RHP Matt Andriese selected from Triple-A Jacksonville
  • RHP Eury Perez undergoing Tommy John out for the 2024 season

Marlins Moves By The Numbers

Kent Emanuel

Emmanuel was selected from Triple-A Jacksonville back on the first and he pitched in last night’s game against the Angels going three innings giving up four runs on four hits; he walked three and struck out two. He didn’t pitch for Jacksonville before being called up by the Marlins.

Jonah Bride

Bride was drafted by the Oakland A’s in the 23rd round of the 2018 MLB draft. He was purchased by the Marlins on February 7th after appearing in 98 career games for the A’s hitting .192 with a .528 OPS; he had seven doubles, one home run, 13 RBI, 26 runs scored, one stolen base, and 30 walks. For the Marlins this season he has played in five games going 1-7 with a walk.

Emmanuel Rivera

Rivera was purchased by the Marlins from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday. In 217 career games between the Kansas City Royals and Arizona Diamondbacks, he hit .249 with a .684 OPS; he had 33 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs, 74 RBI, 91 runs scored, four stolen bases, and 53 walks. Last season with the Diamondbacks he played in 86 games hitting .261 with a .672 OPS; he had 13 doubles, four home runs, 29 RBI, 32 runs scored, one stolen base, and 22 walks.

Matt Andriese

Andriese has been around for seven seasons having played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox, and Seattle Mariners. He has appeared in 217 games with 50 of those coming as starts going 28-37 with a 4.63 ERA, a 4.21 FIP, a 1.33 WHIP, and 474 strikeouts in 509 innings. Last season, he pitched at Triple-A Oklahoma City which is the Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate he made 21 appearances with 19 of those coming as starts going 8-6 with a 6.05 ERA, a 1.56 WHIP, and 78 strikeouts in 93.2 innings. He signed with the Marlins on November 29, 2023.

Eury Perez

Perez is the Marlins young phenom arm and in his first season last year, he went 5-6 with a 3.15 ERA, a 4.11 FIP, a 1.12 WHIP, and 108 strikeouts in 91.1 innings. He was poised to have a breakout season in 2024 but that has come crashing down after just seven games. In spring training, he made four starts going 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, and 11 strikeouts in eight innings.
