Game 2: Nick Pivetta (9-8, 4.54 ERA) vs. Carlos Rodon (2-5, 6.60 ERA)

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

This was supposed to be James Paxton getting the ball, but signs are pointing toward Nick Pivetta making the start as he replaces Paxton in the rotation. Pivetta this season posts a 4.45 FIP, a 1.23 WHIP, a 3.6 BB/9, and an 11.5 K/9. In his career against the Yankees, Pivetta is 1-3 with a 7.23 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, and a 10.2 K/9. Pivetta has faced them four times out of the bullpen this season, going 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA, a 0.52 WHIP, and an 11.2 K/9. The Red Sox starter will face Carlos Rodon, who is making his 11th start for the Yankees season; he posts a 6.48 FIP, a 1.40 WHIP, a 4.1 BB/9, and an 8.0 K/9. Rodon has made five starts against the Red Sox in his career, going 1-3 with a 3.60 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, and a 10.5 K/9; he has not faced them yet this season.

Game 3: Tanner Houck (4-9, 5.28 ERA) vs. TBD

Houck will get the series’ third game against the Yankees, making his 18th start of the season and fifth start since returning to the Red Sox rotation. This season, Houck posts a 4.46 FIP, a 1.34 WHIP, a 3.2 BB/9, and an 8.3 K/9. In his last start against the Orioles, he struggled going 5.1 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits; he walked two and struck out five. In his career against the Yankees, he has pitched in 11 games, with two being starts; he is 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP, and an 8.5 K/9. The Yankees have not announced an opening for game three yet.

Game 4: TBD vs. Michael King (4-5, 2.82 ERA)

The Red Sox have not announced a starter for the finale yet. This is Chris Sale’s spot in the rotation; however, it has been rumored they will skip his next start to rest his arm or potentially shut him down for the season, so it remains to be seen who will get the ball. The Red Sox starter will face Michael King for the Yankees, who is making his 46th appearance and sixth start, posting a 3.07 FIP, a 1.13 WHIP, a 2.8 BB/9, and a 10.8 K/9. In his career against the Red Sox, King is 2-3 in 12 appearances and two starts, posting a 6.00 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, and an 8.0 K/9. This season against the Red Sox, King has pitched in three games, going 0-0 with a 15.75 ERA, a 3.00 WHIP, and a 4.5 K/9.

Series Prediction

It’s hard to predict this series without knowing who will pitch game three for the Yankees and game four for the Red Sox. The Yankees had been revitalized as of late thanks to the call-up of Jasson Dominguez, who was slashing .258/.303/.677 with a .980 OPS, four home runs, and seven RBI, but his season came to an end as it was announced he needed surgery on his UCL. With Dominguez out and the Yankees not having played great baseball against the Red Sox this season, the Red Sox can take three of four in this series, but I’ll play it safe as the 2023 Red Sox have been a roller coaster and say it’s a series split.
