Boston Red Sox Select Marcus Phillips 33rd Overall

The Boston Red Sox continued their draft with another pitcher. They have drafted right-handed pitcher Marcus Phillips out of Tennessee with the 33rd overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. Phillips, this season at Tennessee, made 17 starts. He went 4-5 with a 3.90 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP, and 98 strikeouts in 83 innings. Philips ranked as the 61st overall prospect. He throws a fastball, a slider, and a changeup. He’s dealt with injuries throughout his career, which hurt his draft profile out of high school. Phillips, with his fastball can touch anywhere from 96-98 mph, and has occasionally touched 100 mph. He was Tennessee’s number two starter this spring.

Phillips was the second-ranked pitcher and played in South Dakota. He was the 190th-ranked pitcher in the country in 2022 and the 500th overall player. In 2023, in his first season at Tennessee, he made 19 appearances with two of those coming as starts, posting a 4.95 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, and 22 strikeouts in 20 innings. That summer, he pitched for Elizabethon of the Appalachian League. In two starts, he posted a 4.76 ERA, a 1.94 WHIP, and six strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
