The Boston Red Sox tonight play the middle game of their three-game series against the Athletics. The Red Sox won the series opener last night, 7-0, behind seven shutout innings from Garrett Crochet. Crochet allowed just three hits, no walks, and struck out ten. Seven different Red Sox drove in a run. Jarren Duran, Alex Bregman, Trevor Story, Carlos Narváez, and Masataka Yoshida all picked up two hits. All five of those hitters drove in a run, with Romy Gonzalez and Nick Sogard driving in the other two. The Red Sox improved to 4-3 in September, averaging 5.4 runs per game while also allowing 5.4 runs per game. Ahead of today’s game, reports are that the Red Sox are calling up their sixth-ranked prospect, left-handed pitcher Connelly Early. Early is expected to start tonight as right-handed pitcher Dustin May is heading to the injured list.

Connelly Early

Early this season has appeared in 21 games with 18 of those coming as starts between Double-A and Triple-A. He is 10-3 with a 2.60 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, and 132 strikeouts in 100.1 innings. In six starts at Triple-A Worcester, he is 3-1 with a 2.83 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP, and 36 strikeouts in 28.2 innings.

Dustin May

May in six appearances, five of which were starts, since joining the Red Sox is 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.69 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts in 28.1 innings. In 19 appearances with 18 coming as starts with the Dodgers before the trade, he went 6-7 with a 4.85 ERA, a 1.35 WHIP, and 97 strikeouts in 104 innings.
